None of the HVAC > contractors around here even carry them. > About 15 years ago, I did some design work for a Fort Wayne, Indiana manufacturer by the name of WaterFurnance (they are still in business). Today, there are many more companies in this arena. The geo-solar theory is rather simple: below a depth of 3f (1m) most American soil is never warmer than 65F or colder than 45F. In the summer 65F soil provides a better heat sink than 90F air. In the winter 45F soil provides a good heat source. Most companies can install an optional kit to make domestic hot water. The cost of these systems is dependant on many environmental factors including soil type, degree-days, and available real estate (usually horizontal loops are preferred but these may not be practical in the city so some installations will employ several vertical loops). Note that I'm talking about closed loops but a small percentage of rural installations employ an open loop scheme where water is pulled out of a well or stream provided these never freeze. If you live on a farm then a ground-source heat pump is probably the only way to go in the long run. If in a city then they might be perceived as a rich man's toy (this will change as energy gets more expensive) Installing the loop(s) is very expensive which means you will probably never get one of these installed for under $10k.
