In *this* case with the Xerox printer, it is "works" vs. "works not". :-) :-) It's been verified today using LPD instead og RawIP. (And yes, spooled-LPD) Works just fine. Getting the Swedish 7-bit char set by using a /SETUP module fo the ANSI format with the "(7" sequence. Printing is done through a dummy LTAxxxx queue assigned to the DCPS queue, since the COBOL apps "prints" using a COPY command. Not my apps... Had to adjust a few other FORM parameters to get rid of wrapped long lines (all lines seems to be written as 85 char COBOL records...). Customer happy and I have a couple of additional chargable hours... :-) :-) Now we'll probably continue with the other Xerox (and other brands) printers at that site. The only "thing" right now is that it *has* to be PS printers, if I'm not wrong. Yeah, blame it on someone else. When you have watched them do it for 20 years, yes, blame them. Some of them even write about it in the newspaper becaus they are actually proud of changing things. After all, what did we hicks know anyway compared to those cosmopolitans. > > Actually, being in the market for a new job anyway (and >> after being away with the Army again for 5-6 months this summer I am >> sure I will be even more in need of a new job when I get back) I am >> looking at a much warmer climate as I expect whereever I end up will >> be my home for the rest of my life, including my retirement years. >> I have no intention of spending any of that shoveling snow. :-) > > At least it's not Buffalo! > >> I have decided to keep my snowblower, however. No, performance was part of the criteria. For our tests, Multinet won more often than it lost but the difference was not big enough to really impact the results. Buffered I/Os require more memory copies and direct I/Os are handled via the high speed interface to the Ethernet drivers and via DMA from there. One of my systems is currently handling several hundred IP packets a second as it is a hub DNS server. The total interrupt load on this system (a DS10) is only 4%. Your belief that the difference in the I/O structure between TCPIP services and Multinet causes Multinet to be a heavier load on the system is not borne out in our tests. Also, your belief that buffered I/Os generate less interrupts than direct I/Os is not quite correct. In order to get the packets out on the wire, an interrupt is required - regardless of the type of I/O used. The only thing that impacts the number of interrupts is how many packets can be placed into the Ethernet driver's ring buffer per write command to the interface and that is driven by how close in time the various processes on the host are sending packets. It is not controlled by the type of I/O used. The type of I/O does control how much overhead is required to get the packet to the hardware and, in my experience at least, direct I/O has the lower overhead. The release notes for the latest V7.0 release state that a "maximum VMS version check" was put in place as of V7.0.1.5; this in addition to a minimum version that had been in place earlier. I've heard from a few places that V7.0.8 (and concurrent CDD) release works fine on a system upgraded to VMS V8.3, but per the release notes the maximum version should be getting tripped. I know that Oracle will not support the outdated Rdb/CDD versions on V8.3 but they reportedly run fine. Is the Rdb maximum VMS version check only on installation? Or is there an actual runtime check for maximum VMS versions which would stop some Rdb versions from running if they were already installed when the system was upgraded to V8.3? I don't have a test system I can do tests on right now; its involved in another project> Thanks for any info. Best I can tell on quick inspection it will reduce the default error handler functionality by killing the ability to return a filename there. I would suggest to recode to leave the Basic provide nam block in place and chase down its RSA pointer for a string copy after the SYS $OPEN. Mind you, as Basic does not do pointers, you may need a helper de-reference function for that and a little white lie. Mr Hobbs (that the name?), I can probably retrieve a workign example of the that. Let me know here, or in an Email if that's appreciated Hein. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 12:25:17 -0700 From: Keith Parris Subject: Re: VMS license fees?
