Update the firmware on the DS20e. (Will update NIC if needed) 2.) Connect NIC to Switch. (Have seen devices not come active until connected) 3.) Verify the the units number on your TCPIC license is high enough to run on a DS20e. Call or e-mail me if you need more specifics on this. It's remotely possiable that your card has gone bad. We have in stock if you need one. -Len Whitwer Puget Sound Data Systems, Inc. 19501 144th Ave. NE Suite D-100 Woodinville, WA 98072 e-mail mailto:len@psds.com Internet: http://www.psds.com Toll Free: (866)857-0710 Tel: (425) 488-0710 Fax: (425) 488-6414 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2008 18:09:49 +0100 From: baldrick Subject: Re: Expanding a RAID5 array Message-ID: Hein RMS van den Heuvel wrote: > On Jun 28, 8:19 am, "Carmine Castiglia" wrote: >> I am running an AlphaServer 1200 with a RAID Array 230/Plus subsystem >> installed. The SWXCR does not allow you to partition the presentation, so if you wanted to add more members to the RAID5 you end up with a bigger disk and less slots for other presentations. Problem with a SWXCR is if the array you want to replace with larger disks is not the last one, you have to remove the others first. You can add them back and the data is more thank likely still there but lots of backing up to be done first. And you'll need patience. Also if you have a spare configured, you need to make that the same as the largest disk, it will also work for the smaller disks. And beware narrow and wide disk differences. As far as I'm aware you can't get narrow 9 gig disks, but you can get narrow 4.3 gig. You may need to replace the shelf with a wide compatible BA356 and a narrow personality module. Been there, done it, worn the t shirt several times. And as Ian Miller points out there are some physical limitations. The main problem I see is that you're using older disks more likely to fail. If your VMS version allows later hardware I'd go for that. HSZ type controllers may suit but again beware the age. I really would consider upgrading and coming onto current hardware, its probably nowhere near as difficult as you imagine, and in another 5 or 10 years you'll probably be faced with that option anyway as you find it harder to maintain your current system. nic -- nclews at csc dot com aka Mr. CP Charges ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2008 10:13:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Len Whitwer Subject: Re: Expanding a RAID5 array Message-ID: <691a7dbc-4421-4642-bcfb-d56995d6158a@l28g2000prd.googlegroups.com> On Jun 28, 6:31=A0pm, Hein RMS van den Heuvel wrote: > On Jun 28, 8:19=A0am, "Carmine Castiglia" wrote: > > > I am running an AlphaServer 1200 with a RAID Array 230/Plus subsystem > > installed. =A0This question concerns a RAID 5 array consisting of three > > DS-RZ1CB-VW (4.3GB) drives. > > That just STUPID. > Sorry if that sounds `akward', but there is just no excuse fior using > a 3 member RAID-5 set. > All the pain, hardly any gain. > > How much room (slots) do you have for additional drives? > If you have just 1 slot, roll =A0out all data temporarely to 1 9gb > drive, remove 2-way set and and more 9g drives. > > Please consider using the new (!?) drives for =A03 or 4 TIMES x9gb in > raid 0+1 configurations. > The swxcr is one of the few controllers to allows, and exploit, an > 'odd' number of drivers in a true raid 1+0. > In a picture, with an Uppercase letter representing a primary copy, > and lowercase the second copy the > data striping will look like: > 1 2 3 > A a B > b C c > D d E > > hth, > Hein. Hi Carmine: After all that (Your original posting) you will still only have an 8GB data set!!!!! If it were me I would do the following. 1.) Do an "IMAGE" backup to tape or another disk. (If enough space available) 2.) Run the SWXER manager program. (ARC console with SWXER floppy or CD) Note: If you do not have program I can e-mail it to you!!!!! 3.) Create a new RAID5 data set with your disks. (We have found that the RAID 0+1 data sets using the 18.2GB disks is much faster than a RAID5 but not as efficeint with space) "18GB drives are very cheap these days" 4.) Do image back from tape/disk to your new data set. You are all done in about 4 hours depending on ammount of data and speed or tape drive!!! Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. -Len Whitwer Puget Sound Data Systems, Inc. 19501 144th Ave. NE Suite D-100 Woodinville, WA 98072 e-mail mailto:len@psds.com Internet: http://www.psds.com Toll Free: (866)857-0710 Tel: (425) 488-0710 Fax: (425) 488-6414 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2008 09:44:07 +0100 From: "R.A.Omond" Subject: Re: How to transfer complete disk images without using tape Message-ID: <48689cdb$0$90275$14726298@news.sunsite.dk> baldrick wrote: > marlow.andrew@googlemail.com wrote: > >> The 4100 system does not need to be available to users at the time. Please be aware that you have (ahem, excellent ;-) ) VMS support on-site (I personally will be the cover either Wednesday or Thursday, plus Friday this week). In addition, you have 24x7 support to include outside-of-office-hours. You seem to be very unaware of this (not your fault). I have been on vacation the last week, otherwise I'd have chimed up earlier. This sort of scenario is one I've dealt with countless times within the company you're currently at over many, many years. ------------------------------ End of INFO-VAX 2008.363 ************************
