Supplement to WPE_INSTALLER_DOC The formal installation documentation was written for WPE V5.010. There are only a few additional instructions for the current version (5.210): VMS VERSION DEPENDENCIES Section files built for use with TPU will continue to run correctly with future versions of VMS. However, occasionally improved versions of TPU and/or of EVE are shipped with new VMS versions. This happened, for instance, with VMS V5.1 The previous version of WPE (V5.010) will not BUILD correctly under VMS V5.1 - but the section file built under VMS V5.0 will continue to RUN correctly. This version of WPE (V5.210) contains improvements. It will BUILD correctly under VMS 5.0 through 5.2 (and possibly later). Conditional code will take advantage of features of TPU and EVE added at VMS Version 5.1 If you build WPE V5.2 under a version of VMS prior to V5.1, it is SUGGESTED that you rebuild WPE after moving to a version of VMS between V5.1 and V5.2. It will not be helpful (or harmful) to rebuild WPE after moving to VMS V5.2 from V5.1 When TPU or EVE change with versions of VMS after V5.2, you should first SAVE a copy of WPE.TPU$SECTION. Then rebuild WPE. If there are no error messages, test to see if anything has broken. You can always go back to a previous WPE.TPU$SECTION file. USER SUPPLEMENT Changes to user functions between WPE V5.0 and 5.2 are primarily improvements to existing functions. A supplement is available describing these changes. See the file WPE_USER_SUPPLEMENT.TXT It is recommended that you read this file, and publish it for your users. ADDED FEATURE FOR SPECIAL PRINTING FUNCTIONS WPE V5.2 adds a feature for control of special printing functions. This is done by recognizing a print command beginning with the letters "DM$" as a command to be handled specially. The primary reason for doing this was to enable printing to an attached printer. The DM program package contains a procedure DM$ATPRINT.COM which may be used. If you are already using DM (i.e., the symbol DM is defined on your system), you are probably already supplying DM$ATPRINT for your users. If this is not the case, the WPE installation procedure automatically moves DM$ATPRINT.COM to sys$common:[sysmgr]. Instructions are then provided: "You may want to edit your SYLOGIN file to add a symbol for printing from WPE using an attached printer. The following symbol is suggested: DM$ATP :== @SYS$MANAGER:DM$ATPRINT After you have done this, WPE users may print to their attached printers by simply entering DM$ATP when asked for their print command. OTHER INFORMATION WPE V5.210 has been tested with versions of EVE and TPU shipped with VMS versions from 5.0 through 5.2. Efforts were made to provide compatibility with DECWindows, but WPE has not been tested in a DECWindows environment. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AUTHOR'S ADDRESS HAS CHANGED: Dale E.
