Perl 5 was released about two weeks ago, and the distributed version builds nad runs fine under VMS. I've appended to this message parts of the release announcement, which describe the new version and provide a list of ftp sites. It's also available by anonymous ftp here (genetics.upenn.edu), in [.perl5]. Once you've unpacked the distribution, take a look at README.VMS in the main source directory for instructions on building Perl, and at PERLVMS.POD in the [.VMS] subdirectory for notes about Perl's operation under VMS. Spare-time work on the VMS port continues, so suggestions (and contributions!) are welcome. I update the copy available for anonymous ftp here periodically to include VMS patches; the next set of changes will probably appear this weekend. The new release provides many new features and an extremely high level of compatibility with previous versions. But more importantly, Perl is now philosophically committed to the notions of extensibility and reusability, so that the language itself can stabilize. Perl 5.0 should configure and build straight out of the box (as it were) on virtually any UNIX system, and even on VMS, too! Ports to other architectures (MS-DOS, Windows/NT) are in the works.
