23 Mar 83 KERMIT Distribution Columbia University Center for Computing Activities 7th Floor, Watson Laboratory 612 West 115th Street New York, N.Y. 10025 Here are some modification I have made to KERMIT-10. We are using it for file transfer between our two remote TOPS-10 systems via two RS-232 lines connected together with a null modem cable. Although the two systems are linked together in an ANF-10 network over a syncronous line, we did not purchase TSKSER and so cannot do file transfers in any other way. There is a growing number of micros on campus, mostly Apples, and I am sure we will eventually use KERMIT on them also. All in all it has been working well. We had been using another program (a modified version of FILSND from an old DECUS tape) to transfer files between the two systems in the same way. It was somewhat faster, especially for binary file where KERMIT must do a lot of quoting, but it was difficult to use and had other problems. Compared to it, I must say KERMIT is really a pleasure to use. The major change made to KERMIT-10 was to add a CONNECT command. It think it is fairly consistent with the implementation in other KERMITs, and needs little explanation. The default escape character is CONTROL-Y, like in KERMIT-20, but is also settable with the SET ESCAPE command. There were a few other changes in the TTY handling to make transfers using a second tty line work properly. I added a few messages and deleted a little bit of code that must have been left over from an earlier version that was no longer used. I also fixed a problem that occured when transfering binary files to or from another TOPS-10 or TOPS-20 system in 7-bit mode that caused bit 35 and sometimes the last byte of the word to be set wrong. I did not do much work on the documentation other than deleting the statement that CONNECT was not implemented in KERMIT-10. It is still true that a user should have little trouble running the TOPS-10 version from the description of KERMIT-20. I added the CONNECT command to the help file, and reformated it to look a little better when using the built in HELP feature, but did not change it much Page 2 content-wise. The tape is in BACKUP/interchange format, 9 track 1600 bpi. Our original version with all the edits conditionalized is on the tape as KERM10.SRC. You may find this version useful if you must merge it with other edits, or for reference to see exactly what changes I made. KERM10.MAC is the final version with all the conditionals removed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. I hope to attack some of the other deficiencies of the TOPS-10 version, such as no wild-carding and lack of a server mode, but now that it is running and performs the basic functions we need, it may take me a while.
