The following are some of the questions I am commonly asked. I hope the following will clarify things. 1. How do I find out who is using the modem? If you get the following error when trying to allocate one of the modems, type the SHOW command listed below to find out who is using the modem. $ ALL TTA4: %SYSTEM-W-DEVALLOC, device already allocated to another user $ $ SHOW DEVICE TTA4:/FULL Device TTA4: 8-APR-1983 14:43:31.26 on line Allocated Error count 0 Owner process id 014E0039 Operations completed 140757 Owner process name GARY Reference count 2 Default buffer size 511 $ 2. Why am I getting two log files from VAXNET? When you exit from VAXNET, if a log file is being closed, VAXNET executes the command "MCR REF logfile_name" to automatically reformat the log file. Since reformatting the log file is usually the next step after exiting from VAXNET, this is now done automatically. 3. How do I abort VAXNET when it's executing a command? The normal procedure for aborting VAXNET is to type a single CTRL/C. CTRL/C will abort auto-dialing, auto-login, dumping a file, or when GET/SENDing a file. In each of these routines, a message is displayed to signify the command has been aborted. If VAXNET does not abort for some reason, then typing a CTRL/Y should get you back to the DCL prompt. After you get the DCL prompt you can type "STOP" to stop VAXNET. Note that CTRL/C and CTRL/Y have no effect when you are in interactive mode. The only character recognized in the mode is the interrupt character (CTRL/A by default) you specified at startup time. If you are typing or editing a file at the remote system, and the screen stops updating, you should try typing a CTRL/Q to resume output. 4. What types of modems can be used with the auto-dial modems? Both the DEC DF03 and the RIXON R212A modems are compatible with the BELL System 103J (300 baud) and 212A (1200 baud) modems. They will not operate with VADIC modems in 3400 mode at 1200 baud. If the remote system is using VADIC 3400 modems, you must use 300 baud. 5. What baud rates will the auto-dial modems operate at? The DEC DF03 on the 750 is setup for 1200 baud. The high speed button on the modem must be released to dial at 300 baud. Please leave this modem in the high speed (1200 baud) position. The RIXON R212A on the 780 will automatically adjust to the incoming baud rate from VAXNET. The baud rates recognized by the RIXON are 0-300 and 1200 baud. 6. Why is the RIXON auto-dial modem not working? In order to auto-dial with the RIXON, all the buttons on the front of the modem must be in the released position. On several occations, the TK/DA (talk/data) button has been placed in the talk position (possibly by someone answering a page). If the modem is in the talk position, you will get the following error message when the number is dialed:
