Dear William Tanenbaum (or whoever intercepts this): We obtained your HOST program from Fermilab several years ago and use it constantly for dialing out of our VAX to other computers. We have made several improvements and cosmetic changes. I get frequent requests for it from other sites, but have always felt inhibited since I have never gotten your permission nor sent you a copy of the changes we have made locally. I would like to let more sites use it by putting it in the public domain DECUS (DEC Users Society) library and putting it on the Fall 1985 DECUS Symposium VAX tape December 8-14, 1985. I am asking your permission and asking for your address so I can send a copy of our version of HOST directly to you. Some of the major changes are autodialing, XMODEM error-correcting file transfer, and automatic switching to a 'chunky' mode to reduce CPU usage when lots of characters are transferred. Please respond quickly, especially if you object, since I am leaving for the DECUS Symposium early December 8. Thank you for writing HOST, it has been the answer to lots of our needs.
