Ted - I have renamed all my directories to correspond to yours, except that some of the stuff that was among my material is top level now. The relevant dirs are: [decuslib] (becomes separate saveset eventually) [90bvaxlt] (ditto) [antivirus] [cker] [deliver] [flowers] [mx] [m2vax] (in [lt90b]) [m2] (in [lt90b]) [news60] (actually 6.0-1 plus patches plus the special decompress program Geoff Huston uses) [pavlin] (new stuff from him coming in a day or so) [readrally] (same stuff as was on tape #5; I removed the duplication) [smallteco] (in [lt90b]) [uucp] (Jamie will replace with a later version, I hope; he told me he expected to finish before Christmas.) [zempel] The directories left in [vax90b.gce90b] are: [.amiga] [.gatekeeper] [.lzw] [.more] (which might want to go to top level; I have to look at it. it WAS sent specially for the sig tapes to me.) [.motif] (might go to l&t) [.net90b] [.ods] [.paws] [.ramdriver] [.vmstar] (will probably disappear; fauconnet did a later one) [.zmodem] Other than that, I don't have the [.amby] material online since that didn't arrive. I see most of our namings were the same. I also consolidated the RSX stuff in a directory [vax90b.zrsx90b] and added Volker Heuck's European RSX stuff to it. I haven't yet unpacked any of the containers; that may not happen till 1991. However it cleans up the directory a bit for the time being. I rechecked the stuff and see that submission 6 was what's marked "not on tape" in your letter. That I agree with. I looked over the submission #7 and wonder what Earthly use it has, but people into Cobol may have something they can do with it. Oh well... The material identified as L&T is I think correctly so identified but is not intended to be exhaustive. I view what is currently in the [vax90b...] tree as undecided but figured that certain clear cut material ought to move now. Therefore the [lt90b] tree contains at the moment: Directory VD3:[LT90B] EPOCH.DIR;1 EPUBS.DIR;1 GNUEMACS.DIR;1 GNUSOFTWARE.DIR;1 M2VAX.DIR;1 M3.DIR;1 NCSA.DIR;1 SMALLTECO.DIR;1 Total of 8 files. and the [vax90b] directory looks like this: Directory VD3:[VAX90B] 4GL_SIG.DIR;1 90BVAXLT.DIR;1 ANTIVIRUS.DIR;1 BAKER.DIR;1 BASILIER.DIR;1 BRIAN-JIM.DIR;1 BRODIE.DIR;1 BULLETIN.DIR;1 BZL.DIR;1 CKER.DIR;1 DECUSLIB.DIR;1 DECUSLIBNDX.DIR;1 DELIVER.DIR;1 DEMAX.DIR;1 DIBOL_TALK.DIR;1 DNORTH.DIR;1 ETAPE.DIR;1 FAUCONNET.DIR;1 FLOWERS.DIR;1 FRANCE.DIR;1 GCE90B.DIR;1 GRC.DIR;1 GROSSER.DIR;1 KRYPTON-NASA.DIR;1 LILUG.DIR;1 LOGGER.DIR;1 LOMASKY.DIR;1 MCLAURIN.DIR;1 MPLOT.DIR;1 MX.DIR;1 NEWS60.DIR;1 NIELAND.DIR;1 OA_SIG.DIR;1 PAVLIN.DIR;1 PITTCORN.DIR;1 RAGOSTA.DIR;1 RANKIN.DIR;1 READRALLY.DIR;1 RICHARDSON.DIR;1 ROBERTS.DIR;1 RTG.DIR;1 RUCKER.DIR;1 SCSU.DIR;1 SDRC.DIR;1 SECURITY.DIR;1 SIDLINGER.DIR;1 SPACEDIR.DIR;1 TANNER.DIR;1 TAYLOR.DIR;1 TEDXREF.XRF;1 UUCP.DIR;1 VLT90B.DOC;5 VLT90B.TXT;4 VLT90B.XREF;2 VMSNET-SOURCES.DIR;1 WORLTON.DIR;1 ZEMPEL.DIR;1 ZRSX90B.DIR;1 Total of 58 files. Grand total of 2 directories, 66 files. I'll add the [.amby] stuff when you can send it. (How big is it this time 'round?) I've done some compressing in my material, in [.grc] and [.dnorth] and [.france] and will do some more in other areas. The [.pavlin] area will get new stuff shortly so I've left it alone for now. I removed my copy of bulletin in favor of yours (think i did that at LV). Also got rid of the redundant copies of DWProfile since Bruce Tanner supplied newer versions of it. I think there were two, one among my stuff and one someplace else...the krypton... stuff I believe. I will look the material over, but if we include the [.epubs] tree, we probably can just count on two separate collections and on making each fit on a 6250BPI tape. That should allow us not to have to do so darn much compression. This is a good thing. I understand that lzcomp under VMS 5.4 produces files that VMS 5.3 cannot restore, though compress is still OK. 5.4 CAN restore files compressed in 5.3 and earlier (I've tried it) and I'm still running 5.3, but I'd like to suspend using lzcomp to the extent possible due to this problem and use straight compress. What I propose is a filename encoding of foo.bck_4096_Z for a backup saveset that is of block size 4096; replace the "4096" by any "nnnnn" for other sizes. This can be handled by Compress just fine, decompressed even on Unix boxes, and restored to correct file attributes with FILE (which still works). Thus one would use $ back/block=mmmmm/group=20/trunc [.something...] something.bck_mmmm and then $ compress something.bck_mmmmm to produce something.bck_mmmmm_z I will send you the results of the areas mentioned (including my areas) shortly, once I'm done compressing them a bit and doing some cleanup. The [france] area in particular had some cruft that needed removal due to duplication with other stuff we have or had last time out, and I removed the copy of kcl.tar_z that I had at the LV show. It seems that item is licensed. The license is free; you just send the form to Japan, and get all sources. However, it is not supposed to be redistributed without the license. Damn. What the heck it was doing in the anonymous ftp area at apple.com I have NO idea! Anyway, that also cuts out over 17,000 blocks. I'll compress some sources that are not really needed, and will possibly work on other areas. May I suggest that we first try to figure out which areas should be vax and which L&T,and then we can work on those respective areas with less interference or collision. Additional nominations for the l&t material that I can make: [.gce90b.motif] motif examples. [.gce90b.paws] general graphics access [.worlton] GKS graphics library [.rtg] RCS port to VMS; SC spreadsheet. (not sure about this one; the [.gnusoftware] has the generic code already and the VMS ports might be better on VAX tape. What do you think?) [.fauconnet.plot_ps] looks like more of an L&T item from the title... I'm not certain. [.mplot] L&T has usually had more of the graphics stuff. There's also some graphics sig stuff from the DECUS France collection, but it cross references a bunch of notes and I don't want to split the damn thing...too hard to read the docs (mostly in French). I translated the aaareadme.1st yesterday but will NOT translate all the docs; I haven't time. Therefore my first approximation is to leave the decus-france stuff in [vax90b...]. I suspect Don Amby's stuff will belong with L&T. Please let me know your ideas. Thanks and I'll get a tape to you of changed stuff soon.
