Hall UUCP: {uunet, wang, ulowell}!samsung!hubdub!rand Merrimack College rand%merrimack.edu@samsung.com N. Andover, MA I spend so much time doing nothing. Life's wasting away. Here's a (probably) incomplete list of new features in NEWS V6.0. EXTRACT without any parameters will extract the message to a file: [homedirectory.NEWS-EXTRACTS]newsgroupname.LIS REPOST is the same as the command sequence EXTRACT, CANCEL, EDIT, POST. SEARCH has been significantly enhanced. You can now do wildcard and pattern-match searches. SET LINE_EDITING ON will let you use the arrow keys for line editing and command recall. Was READ/TOPIC here before? It works like READ/PARENT only it will display the oldest message in in the thread. UNREAD and UNREAD/ALL do what you think they should. UNSKIP undoes last SKIP or SET SEEN. SET PROFILE incorporates most of the new settings on a permanent basis and contains /LOCSIGNATURE which lets you have a local signature for local postings. If you have SET PROFILE/NEWREGISTER set news will ask you if you want to register for groups created since your last session. The nicest thing I found was the concept of ALLITEMS, UNSEENITEMS, and UNSEENSTACK. In a directory view of a newsgroup you can now specify what items get displayed. ALLITEMS is the behavior you're used to--the last few read items and then a bunch of unread items. UNSEENITEMS will display ONLY unread items. UNSEENSTACK will start the display with the first unread item (i.e., it WILL display read items as long as they're after the first unread item.) This is confusing. Related commands: SET DISPLAY/ALLITEMS or /UNSEENITEMS or /UNSEENSTACK will set the display property for all newsgroups for THIS session only. SHOW ALLITEMS or UNSEENITEMS or UNSEENSTACK will set the display property for JUST this newsgroup for THIS session only. My preference? SET PROFILE/DISPLAY=UNSEENITEMS and then when I want to see some older stuff I do a SHOW ALLITEMS. UNSEENITEMS cuts down the swill you need to wade through on the screen. This is a BIG bonus for dialup users.
