You need to do more than just define fast_load. You actually need to set it in your profile to take effect. The define just enables the feature within the code. I prepared some notes for our students which I attach and might be useful. /FASTLOAD has a few bugs/problems. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 News_hints The following represent some hints to make NEWS more usable for those more advanced users out there. The main things which can be achieved is reducing the start-up time to about 5 seconds (from the current 60 seconds plus). - Saving Disk Space: SET PROFILE/RCFILTER stores only the registered newsgroups in NEWSRC. file. [Not necessary is you use /FASTLOAD] - Speeding up access (to News): SET PROFILE/FASTLOAD (snag is difficult to get to groups other than those to which you are registered) ** FASTLOAD has bugs - but should be OK ** (indiv. groups): SET PROFILE/DISPLAY=(NOLINES,NOPOST) (snag is you don't get the no. of lines and date of each message displayed) SET PROFILE/DISPLAY=UNSEENSTACK (picks up only the items from the first one you haven't read, reduces the number of items which news has to process, snag is that counts reflect only un-read items rather than items available, also more difficult to get to old items which you may wish to re-read) - Signature File (appends this file to the end of your postings, like many of the messages on the net) SET PROFILE/SIGNATURE=file - Applying a personal name to the Header of all your postings SET PROFILE/PERSONAL="Your Name" - Changing the order of the groups in the display list on screen SET PROFILE/RCORDER then edit NEWSRC. file an put the lines in the order you require. - Allowing command-line recall. CTRL-B always allows commands to be recalled. Full recall can be obtained by doing a SET LINE (SET PROFILE/LINE should set this permanently, but doesn't work ask BRUCE for a fix if you want to do this!) The cursor keys are mapped onto moving the message/group selection arrow up and down by default. Keys "5" and "2" on the keypad also do this so you can dispense with them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are some other bits come in with this file, but you can just ignore these. -- Regards, Bruce. ================================================================================ __ __ E D I N B U R G H E D / ) _ _ / ` ._/_/ . _ _ __ D I N B U R G H E D I /--< /`~/ / / )/_) / _. / / / / / )/ )( I N B U R G H E D I N /___/ / (_/ (_ (_ (__/ / / / / / /(_/__) N B U R G H E D I N B Dept. of Geography, Univ. of Edinburgh ._/ B U R G H E D I N B U Drummond Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9XP, Scotland.
