So far so good. As part of the process, I installed the domain server. As near as I can tell, it isn't working. Any and all queries for other than the root get an error. So, I break out the trouble shooting guide for the domain server and following the instructions I find that the cache is empty: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HULK::$1$DIA2:[.SYSMGR]$ domain/print Name tree: Lock 0008B610: 0 Lock 0008B924: 0 Name 0008B904: [root] Zone list: Lock 0008B61C: 0 Keep current list: Lock 0008B63C: 0 Forwarder list: Lock 0008B62C: 0 Preferred address list: Lock 0008B648: 0 HULK::$1$DIA2:[.SYSMGR]$ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- or, at least, that's how I interpret it. This is a little odd, since I did (I believe) put together a correct startup and zone files: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ; Startup file for domain server primary dmc.com domsdir:dmc-com.zone_master primary 1.1.192.in-addr.arpa domsdir:1-1-192.zone_master -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And the zone master files are: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ; ; Zone master file for dmc.com ; ; Modified: ; ; 0.000 Dick Munroe 17-Mar-92 ; Initial version created. ; @ in soa thehulk.dmc.com. When I run lookup against this server I get the following: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HULK::$1$DIA2:[.SYSMGR]$ domain/lookup Lookup> lookup thehulk.dmc.com/serv=192.1.1.1/full Response from 192.1.1.1: Query 1, response, standard query, recursion desired, recursion available, ser ver failure 1 queries, 0 answers, 0 name servers, 0 additional Query: THEHULK.DMC.COM A IN Response time: 0.050 seconds; Times sent: 1 Lookup> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- but when I do: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HULK::$1$DIA2:[.SYSMGR]$ ipncp IPNCP> hostnm 192.1.1.1 Host '192.1.1.1' Full Name = 'DMC.COM' Address [1] = 192.1.1.1 IPNCP> hostnm dmc.com Host 'DMC.COM' Full Name = 'DMC.COM' Address [1] = 192.1.1.1 IPNCP> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The right thing happens. What, if anything, is going on with my DNS requests? Is there a bug in DOMAIN/PRINT? Why doesn't the name server respond? I've included my INTERNET.CONFIG file below, just in case there is a problem there. I can get by without the name server for a while, but not forever. Any and all help is very much appreciated.
