Reply-To: mcmahon@tgv.com In article <1992Jun20.070234.16821@socrates.umd.edu> you write: =We have a VAXstation II/GPX running VMS5.4-3 and UCX 1.3. =I want it to accept x-clients from the outside but all I =have managed so far is having the clients getting a ="Client is not authorized to access server" message =from the VAXstation. This indicates that the Server is listening to the IP network, but does not want to receive connections from your client node. This means that DECwindows and UCX have been started properly. =I have fiddled with the sm.host_list =parameter (how about sm.num_hosts btw?) by putting =in it: = = tcpip host1 host2 * I would not advise fooling with the "sm" resources that control security. I would suggest you use the Session Manager pull-down "Customize" and pick the Security menu. Enter Transport TCPIP, Username "*" and Hostname "host1". Do the same with "host2". Hit the APPLY button and away you go. =What am I doing wrong in DECW$SM_GENERAL.DAT Use the session manager in this case. It will allow you to change those resources on the fly. Manually editing will probably require you to logout and login again. Keep in mind that hacking resource files is unsupported in some versions of DECwindows. I don't know if these resources were documented in the Motif release. FYI: The proper format for those resources appears to be... sm.host_list: nodename username, node user,... where is the proper protocol, NULL seems to default to DECnet. sm.num_hosts: is an integer, indicating the number of comma-separated entries in sm.host_list: =Somebody =made referance at one point that there was a user-id check =as well (in some old posts I had on this subject)? That applies to DECnet only. TCP/IP does not currently support username based security in X windows (under VMS). -- John 'Fast-Eddie' McMahon () TGV, Incorporated () "Any networking problem can be solved by 603 Mission Street () the application of 33 miles of Unshielded Santa Cruz, California 95060 () Twisted Pair (UTP)" 408-427-4366 or 800-TGV-3440 () [InterOp Spring 1992] E-Mail: MCMAHON@TGV.COM ()
