Vivace (ve-VAH-chee) and Browser V2 Press release from Digital Equipment. -----------------------------8<------------------------------------------- DIGITAL INTRODUCES DESKTOP MANAGER FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS USERS Object-Oriented "Vivace for Windows" Allows Users to Simplify and Energize Their Use of Windows Maynard, Massachusetts -- June 2, 1992 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today introduced Vivace for Windows, a customizable desktop manager that helps Microsoft Windows users work more easily with multiple applications, network services, and large numbers of documents. Vivace (ve-VAH-chee) runs on stand-alone personal computers and on any PC LAN. Digital also announced an enhanced version of Browser for Windows, an information navigator that helps users locate information on any PC LAN or wide-area network. Digital said both products can help people attain "network transparency," the ability to focus on the right information to make more informed, faster decisions instead of having to waste time on the complexities of technology. Vivace, named after the musical direction for "in a lively or vivacious manner," creates a customized representation of the user's personal work environment. The desktop manager includes icons to depict file cabinet levels, documents, applications, network services, printers, FAX machines, CD-ROM drives, and other peripherals. Each Vivace user can organize their PC desktop to mirror his or her physical office. The new desktop manager is designed to function the way people work and think: It allows a person to focus on the document rather than the application. For example, without Vivace, a user must "FIND" an application, load it into memory, click on "FILE," click on "OPEN," then look for the right file name, and, finally, click on the file name to load it into memory. With Vivace, a user simply clicks on the meaningful document name; Vivace handles the rest. DIGITAL INTRODUCES DESKTOP MANAGER FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS When a user cannot remember the name or place of a document, Vivace's powerful search capability helps find the document easily, on the PC or PC LAN, regardless of which application produced the document. All documents found are immediately available for editing. If the user simply clicks on the icon, Vivace starts the right application, with the right document, with the right predetermined templates. Out of the box, Vivace recognizes and automatically integrates 40 popular PC applications. Additional applications can be integrated through a simple scripting capability. Vivace enables users to "drag-and-drop" documents to multiple devices such as printers, FAX machines, CD-ROM drives, and floppy-disk drives, and allows users to integrate new peripherals or network services with ease. It also enables users to assign meaningful names to documents and to file documents in archives under multiple storage levels. Resellers are greeting the new desktop manager with enthusiasm. "Vivace has proven to be a highly sophisticated platform to build an office automation infrastructure by providing the basic building blocks required for organizational solutions," said Dr. Claus Commandeur, president of Office Communication Products (OCP) headquartered in Germany. "Vivace's functional strengths in the areas of desktop management and application integration have enabled OCP to develop highly integrated office and communication products for the corporate user with a guarantee for ongoing success in the future. Major European accounts such as oil companies, airlines, and government agencies have made strategic decisions for OCP Office with Vivace." "Vivace picks up where Windows leaves off," said Ron Ham, group manager for Digital's Personal Computer Applications Business. "With its powerful search capabilities and its integration capabilities with popular E-mail packages and other network services, Vivace helps users make sense out of the multitude of files created by dozens of desktop applications. Vivace is going to be a great help to the growing population of Windows users and to the teams of people who share documents on LANs. "End-users are love it because it's easy to use. MIS and PC managers love it because it protects their hardware and software investments, maintains network security, simplifies their ability to add new technologies as they emerge, and reduces training costs," he said. DIGITAL INTRODUCES DESKTOP MANAGER FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS PRICING AND AVAILABILITY Vivace is available immediately, at a U.S. list price of $145. The product is available through Digital as well as value-added resellers, distributors and mail-order houses. Vivace currently is available in eight languages: Dutch, English (U.K.), English (U.S.), French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. WORKS WITH POPULAR NETWORKS AND APPLICATIONS Vivace for Windows Version 1.0 runs on top of Microsoft Windows version 3.0 and 3.1. Vivace works with, rather than replaces, the Windows Program Manager. Digital is planning support for additional platforms, such as Microsoft Windows NT and International Business Machines' Presentation Manager for OS/2. Version 1.0 supports Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES, and Digital PATHWORKS; cc:Mail for Windows, DaVinci for Windows, Microsoft Mail for Windows and ALL-IN-1 MAIL for Windows. Vivace is the first Digital application to support third-party mail services (such as Microsoft Mail) in addition to Digital's own ALL-IN-1 MAIL (X.400) for Windows. Vivace's use of object-orientation and support for Microsoft Windows interfaces means that Digital and customers can easily add support for new third-party applications. Digital is planning to enhance Vivace's integration with the rest of the company's PC and Office suite of products. Vivace also enables several users to share one PC, with secure separation of each user's working environment, permitting "flex-time" use of office resources and portable computers. Vivace complements Digital's PATHWORKS Links family, which includes Browser, Conferencing (Notes), and ALL-IN-1 Mail (X.400). It allows Windows users to navigate across LANs easily and to improve their ability to communicate as a team. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Vivace will run on any Intel 80286-, 80386-, or 80486-based personal computer that includes one MB of extended memory (two MB is recommended), a 40MB hard disk or network disk with 1.5 MB of free space, a 720KB diskette drive, and a mouse or other Windows pointing device. In a PC LAN, at least one base system must have a 720KB diskette drive; in an asynchronous network environment, every base system must have one 720KB diskette drive and 1.5 MB of free hard-disk space. Vivace requires MS-DOS Version 3.3, 4.0, 4.1, or 5.0; and Microsoft Windows Version 3.0 or 3.1. DIGITAL INTRODUCES DESKTOP MANAGER FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS Vivace works with any popular network operating system including Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES, and Digital PATHWORKS. BROWSER FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 2.0 In addition to Vivace, Digital announced version 2.0 of Browser for Windows, an information navigator announced last November. Browser V1.0 provided the user with network navigation, including the ability to find, view, and convert files. The new version enables Browser users to find information located in mail folders, conferences, and documents. Browser works with Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES, and Digital PATHWORKS. It enables users to find and use documents, spreadsheets, and graphics anywhere on a PC, PC LAN, or wide-area network. The new version adds new search, filtering, and integration features that clearly differentiate Browser from competitive file managers. It further extends the user's ability to navigate and communicate across local- and wide-area networks. The new Browser is fully integrated with PATHWORKS' PC Mail folders and messages, and with PATHWORKS Conferencing (Notes) conferences, notes, and replies. The enhanced version extends filtering and searching capabilities, and enables the user to make network connections to file and print services along with the mail and conferencing services. A new paned window enables users to view files in PC Mail and notes; the feature displays header information in the top pane and content in the bottom pane. Another new feature is the extension of global search to enable users to employ multiple search-result windows and apply actions to items in each window. In addition, a new DDE interface will allow other Windows applications to be integrated with Browser. This integration gives those applications access to information that Browser finds, including mail and notes. Browser Version 2.0 has a U.S. list price of $95. It will be available this fall. Like Vivace, Browser will be available through Digital as well as value-added resellers, distributors and mail-order houses. "Vivace and Browser demonstrate our commitment to the Windows user," said Ham. "Once again, we are showing that we can continue to deliver PC-based products in a timely manner to meet the growing needs of users. Our goal is to deliver products that make life easier for the Windows user." Vivace runs on stand-alone personal computers and on any PC LAN. Vivace (ve-VAH-chee), creates a customized representation of the user's personal work environment. Vivace uses icons to depict file cabinets, documents, applications, network services, printers, FAX machines, CD-ROM drives, and other peripherals. The desktop manager enables users to search for documents in archives stored on PCs or PC LANs, basing their search on document content, name, description, creation date, or location -- regardless of what application produced the documents. Key Features and Benefits: Document Handling -- Users can create, open, delete, move, copy, rename, and print documents, and retrieve them from the wastebasket via icons. Users can display information about each document, such as the creation date, date last modified, owner, and the full DOS pathname. Powerful Search Facility -- Users can search for documents and compartments by specifying content, name, description, owner, or creation date. The user can search any or all filing levels within Vivace. All items found in a search are immediately available for editing. Users can conduct searches in several steps, narrowing the results at each step. A long search can be interrupted to inspect the result (to the point of interruption); the user then can continue the search or start editing the document. Naming Convention -- Users can assign meaningful names (up to 24 characters) to documents, filing compartments, and services. Documents and filing compartments can have an additional 60-character description for further identification. Document Filing -- Vivace stores all documents in archives. The system automatically sets up one archive for each user; however, each user can choose to maintain up to 30 archives. Users also can set up the number of storage levels they want to use, up to a maximum of six. Users can file documents at any level in an archive. A user can retrieve a filed document, read or edit it on the desktop, and then ask the system to file it automatically in its original location. Related documents can be filed together, regardless of the types of applications used to create them. Most of the document-handling functions are available in the archives; the user does not have to put the document on the desktop first. Users can create, open, copy, rename, and delete filing compartments such as drawers and folders, just as for documents. When the user moves, copies, or deletes a filing compartment, or retrieves it from the wastebasket, all of the compartment's contents move with it. Customizable Document Backup -- Whenever the user deletes a document, Vivace places a copy in the wastebasket. The user can predetermine the number of calendar days items are to be kept in the wastebasket. When this holding period has expired, the user can choose whether the item should be deleted or retained as backup. Import of Existing DOS Files -- DOS files not filed under Vivace are displayed as DOS files on the Vivace desktop and in the archives. The user can convert these files into Vivace documents by importing them. Importing a document involves associating it with one of the editors set up in Vivace, choosing an icon for it, and giving it a Vivace name and description. Sharing Resources in a Network -- Vivace users whose PCs are connected to a LAN can share the use of resources and networked applications, and can access shared archives. All access rights set up for the network remain in force. Context-Sensitive Help -- At any time, the user can display "help" information about the current situation or action. Furthermore, the help facility tracks the user's actions: As the user opens windows and menus, or selects items or menu entries, the help information changes accordingly. Users can open, close, move, or size the help window just like any other window. Open and Extendable Environment -- Users can specify third-party applications to be used as document editors, as services on the desktop, or as entries in the tools menu. For example, the user simply browses for the command (.exe, .bat, etc.) that starts the application. Users can represent services with icons, from a set of 32 icons. Simple Integration of Applications -- Vivace handles documents created by many types of Windows and non-Windows applications. Out of the box, Vivace recognizes and automatically integrates 40 popular PC applications. Additional applications can be integrated through a simple scripting capability. By means of default document icons, start-up commands, and templates, Vivace provides for automatic integration with those applications present on the system. Businesses by the tens of thousands are becoming aware that networked PCs can facilitate the sharing of files, data, applications, and resources. These capabilities, in turn, improve communication and individual productivity. In short, the computing power is shifting from the desktop to the integrated network. Users want more power ON the desktop and more power FROM the desktop. They want powerful desktop applications and they want applications to work with each other via the network. To meet these demands, Digital Equipment Corporation developed the PATHWORKS network operating system (NOS). PATHWORKS goes beyond file and print services to provide a network computing environment that integrates different desktop devices such as PC and Macintosh systems with a wide variety of server platforms. It supports different communications protocols, network topologies, and industry-standard applications. PATHWORKS allows PC users to access facilities as if they were physically connected to their PCs. PATHWORKS also allows interoperability with a wide variety of other networking software, including Novell NetWare. During the five years that Digital has offered PATHWORKS, customers have connected more than one million desktops using this network operating system. While PATHWORKS provides the infrastructure for network computing, desktop users are mainly concerned with the applications they run on the network. The PC Applications Group is an organization whose main function is to add value continually to the PATHWORKS environment as well as other leading network operating system environments. This Business Unit pursues its goals through: * The Personal Computing Developer Program, and * Digital-Built Applications Program DIGITAL'S PC APPLICATIONS BUSINESS STRATEGY PERSONAL COMPUTING DEVELOPER PROGRAM The goal of the Personal Computing Developer Program is to build long-term relationships with developers to customize software and hardware solutions that meet specific customer needs. The program encourages third-party PC software developers to build applications and hardware products that are compatible with and complementary to Digital's PATHWORKS and PATHWORKS Links product sets. Through this program, Digital offers developers a wide variety of technical and marketing services: * Developer Network * Personal Computing Development Center * Software Loaner Program * Developer Events Developer Network The Developer Network is the primary channel through which the Personal Computing Developer Program disseminates technical information to developers. It provides 24-hour, worldwide technical support to members of the Personal Computing Developer Program. The network also enables members to access and discuss a wide variety of technical topics with Digital staff as well as other third-party developers, via notes files that focus on personal computing topics and information. The staff of the Developer Network continuously monitors the network to provide prompt responses to members' questions. Personal Computing Development Center The Personal Computing Development Center (Littleton, Massachusetts) houses the latest Digital personal computing products. At the Center, software developers can test their products with released versions of PATHWORKS products, released versions of Browser, Conferencing, ALL-IN-1 Mail and Vivace, along with pre-release versions of forthcoming products. The Center also includes prototypes of Digital hardware currently in development. In addition, developers can use the Center's facilities to complete the actual development of products that complement PATHWORKS. Software Loaner Program Under the Software Loaner Program, software developers can borrow copies of software, such as PATHWORKS, Mobilizer, Browser, Conferencing, ALL-IN-1 Mail and Vivace to help with their in-house development efforts. Developers who participate in this program automatically receive new versions of borrowed programs as they are released. DIGITAL'S PC APPLICATIONS BUSINESS STRATEGY Developer Events The Personal Computing Developer Program sponsors semiannual Developer Conferences, which provide third-party commercial developers with the information that will allow them to develop applications that are compatible with PATHWORKS and PC applications. The conferences also are opportunities for the companies' business development people to become part of Digital's third-party marketing programs. Each semiannual conference includes non-disclosure sessions on Digital product direction and marketing plans, birds-of-a-feather sessions, computer laboratories, and consulting services. Digital also participates in a large number of industry trade shows. At these shows, Digital highlights third-party products and their integration with Digital's personal computing products. DIGITAL-BUILT APPLICATIONS PROGRAM The Digital-Built Applications Program is aimed at developing and enhancing the PATHWORKS environment in three strategic application areas: network transparency, communications, and mobile computing. NETWORK TRANSPARENCY: The Group ensures that users can navigate (find their way around) networks more easily, and that users can access network services more easily -- in effect, to make the network operating system completely transparent to end-users. Examples of Digital products that achieve this goal are the Vivace for Windows desktop manager and Browser for Windows information navigator (see accompanying press release). COLLABORATION: The Group develops applications that enhance one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many communication via PC networks. Digital's "ALL-IN-1 MAIL" products (for DOS, Windows or Macintosh) are examples of one-to-one and one-to-many communication. PATHWORKS Conferencing, which enables teams of professionals to carry on electronic conferences, is an example of many-to-many communication. MOBILE COMPUTING: An increasing number of PC users want to access their network resources while they are away from their offices. The PC Applications Group develops applications that enable these mobile users to tap the same networking power they can from their desks. A recent example is Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1, a product Digital introduced in 1991. This application offers "off the plug" ALL-IN-1 Mail service for any portable, including the popular, 1.2-pound super portable, The Poqet PC. DIGITAL'S PC APPLICATIONS BUSINESS STRATEGY The PC Applications Group has developed, and continues to enhance, the following products: Browser for Windows Because PC users store files and information anywhere on a network, every user's personal efficiency depends on the ability to locate files and to move files. Browser for Windows is an information navigator that enables PC users to find, view, and use DOS files anywhere on a network. Users also need to work with multiple applications and data in many different formats, making interoperability a critical need. With Browser's viewers and converters, one user on the network can produce a file in a specific application, and another user can view and/or convert the file to another application. Browser goes beyond file management to provide a global perspective of files -- plus integration, viewing and converting. For example, a user can: * Display files in three different directories on three different drives * Search for information on specific drives or Mail folders or Conferencing files. * Search for a file name that starts with, ends with, or contains a specific search string * Search for text within a file * Search by file size or creation date * Use a filter in order to view only specific types of files * View a file that was created by a different application, even if the application is not installed on the user's system * Double-click on a file to launch the associated application automatically (provided that it is installed on the user's system) The PC Applications Group plans to enhance Browser by offering additional viewers, including viewers that can: * Handle Compound Document Architecture (CDA) documents and audio files * Search active conferences (PATHWORKS Conferencing) and mail folders * Search printers, FAX machines, and remote systems DIGITAL'S PC APPLICATIONS BUSINESS STRATEGY PATHWORKS Conferencing PATHWORKS Conferencing, which is the Microsoft Windows client for DEC Notes, enables users to conduct electronic meetings and have on-line discussions. Because members of work teams are often separated by time and distance, they need the ability to communicate on a "many-to-many" basis. With PATHWORKS Conferencing, multiple users can have discussions and exchange ideas. The PC Applications Group plans to add support for additional client and server platforms for the PATHWORKS Conferencing product. ALL-IN-1 MAIL for Windows ALL-IN-1 MAIL for Windows is the Microsoft Windows client for X.400 mail. With ALL-IN-1 MAIL for Windows, users can communicate both locally and globally via private or public networks, regardless of the applications used to create the messages or documents. Because ALL-IN-1 MAIL for Windows complies with X.400 P2 mail protocols, it offers internationally standard mail features and a higher level of service. ALL-IN-1 MAIL for Windows enables users to: * Send and receive mail messages throughout a network * Launch applications based on message attachments * Integrate with other PC applications through Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) * Integrate mail functions with standard applications, such as Microsoft WORD, Microsoft Excel, and Lotus Ami Pro, using provided sample macros The PC Applications Group plans to build more features for the mail client, such as audio mail messages and integration with FAX machines and scanners; viewers that will allow users to read file attachments without having the corresponding application installed on their systems; and additional mail servers. Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1 Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1 is a mobile computing application that simulates an ALL-IN-1 session on a portable computer running the MS-DOS operating system. With Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1, users can read, store, create, and send messages compatible with the ALL-IN-1 Integrated Office System (IOS). DIGITAL'S PC APPLICATIONS BUSINESS STRATEGY Because mobile computing is the most efficient way to access mail and data while away from the office, Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1 is a great help to users who work from remote locations. Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1 sends and receives ALL-IN-1 messages when connected with ALL-IN-1 IOS over a modem or a Local Area Transport (LAT) line. With Mobilizer for ALL-IN-1, users can temporarily connect to their IOS accounts and retrieve mail messages. Users then disconnect and work on their messages. When finished, they simply reconnect to ALL-IN-1 IOS and send responses and new messages through their mail networks. The PC Applications Group plans to enhance the Mobilizer environment by providing support for additional types of mail, such as VMS and X.400, and by building mobilized capabilities into existing applications, such as Browser and PATHWORKS Conferencing.
