Hmmm... look no further than the DECwindows Mail Utility... The DECwindows Mail Utility supports two (undocumented) logical names that define the Icon used when you have new mail... and when you do not. The logical names are (drum roll)... DECW$MAIL_NEWMAILICON DECW$MAIL_NOMAILICON Each should point to a X11 Bitmap file. Bitmap files can be created with the BITMAP tool in DECW$EXAMPLES, with DECwindows Paint or there is a whole archive on GATEKEEPER.DEC.COM (directory: /.1/X11/R4-contrib/poskbitmaptars). You will need VMSTAR for the GATEKEEPER files, some of them are really neat. To get you started, you will find my NEWMAIL/NOMAIL icons (borrowed from some X11 archive) in the Anonymous FTP directory on TGV.COM, subdirectory [.MCMAHON]. Cheers!
