(and a puzzle..help?) Message-Id: <1992Mar3.103708.554@fps.mcw.edu> Sender: info-vax-request@kl.sri.com To: info-vax@kl.sri.com (ed: I initially posted this to vmsnet.networks.desktop.pathworks and vmsnet.misc, but I also want it here, since it DOES involve ODS-2 disks...) Message-ID: <1992Mar3.103516.553@fps.mcw.edu> OK guys, here's a nifty puzzle! I have figured out a way for a PC client to read ODS-2 format compact disks from an infoserver. (pay attention, guys... and no, you do *not* need the MS-DOS extensions!) The reason: some ODS-2 disks (most notable the DECUS CDROM collection) contains subdirectories that have TONS of nifty PC utilities, programs, and tools, which I'd love to get to my pc in an orderly and efficient fashion. It can be done by using the following: 1) Create a standard ODS-2 "service" for the CDROM. Let's call it DECUS (which translates to a DAD$DECUS device). Do it exactly the same way you would create a service for CON DIST or ONLINE DOC. 2) From the ADMIN/PCSA manager on the VAX, create a common FILE service USER (call it "DECUS"), and make the default (login) directory DAD$DECUS:[000000] . The PCSA routines will go ahead and create the UAF account, etc. etc (but will blow up at the end attempting to create AUTOUSER.BAT. No problem tho, since we'll use it as a file SERVICE, and not a USER that LOGS IN.). 3) From the PC, then, USE the new service. C:> use E: \\server\DECUS where "server" is the VAX name 4) Now you're all set! Go to the "E:" drive. Using the spring 1991 format, you can take a look at e:\LT91A\PC\MSDOS and there you'll find tons of .ZIP files containing all sorts of neat things. Now, for the PROBLEM. I seem to have access to all of the stuff in that directory. i.e., I can TYPE out text files, I can RUN executables, and I can do a straight dos COPY from the "E" drive to the "C" (or other) drive, to go ahead an UNZIP the files. I can do dos DIRs and SEE all the stuff. [here's the puzzle part...] The problem I apparently have is that the PKUNZIP utility has trouble unzipping the files, *if* I attempt to unzip them from the "E" drive. (or "D", or whatever) I get "PKUNZIP error-- error opening E:.ZIP" "no files found" (however, if I simply COPY the .ZIP file to my hard drive, it unzips just dandy.) So, the question is, what's the problem here? Does PKUNZIP have trouble reading a read-only disk? Is there some important file service config I am missing? I have what I think is a powerful method to better use my CDROM disk, and I am baffled. (has anyone else even ATTEMPTED this?). I'd like others to give it a shot if they have time... damned weird problem which I'd like to solve. -- Kent C.
