This thing is turning into a form letter) Regarding your usenet or info-vax query about lpr/lpd for UCX.... Here is a reprint of an earlier posting. The UCX software mentioned here prints only from the VAX to an external system (which is entirely peachy for my purposes here at TRW). The software will need a 2-line fix for some "filters" on the external lpd server, if the external "filter" is fussy or dumb, to prevent it from going bonkers. Shouldn't be a problem except for a few antique systems. The "lpr" print queue appears to the VAX/VMS user to be an entirely normal VAX queue. The user just does a PRINT/QUEUE=xxx command. The anonymous FTP site below includes "lpd" software to support printing to the VAX printers, but this has NOT been converted for UCX. What you want is a program called BSDSMB_UCX.C, to print outbound from the VAX, if you decide to check it out. I scooped it up by anonymous FTP from the site "ecf.ncsl.nist.gov." Answer: Sure. We have one. We developed one when running The Wollongong Group's software before they offered theirs. We currently run Multinet and use their implementation. I still make our software available via anonymous FTP to anyone who is desperate enough (mainly UCX sites 8-)). -Dan ============================================================================== From: bill@nickel.ucs.sfu.ca (Bill Baines) I posed a similar question a couple of days ago. (VMS doesn't come with TCP/IP built in you know.) You can do what we do, which is to run the best TCP/IP, MultiNet from TGV. MultiNet supports both LPD client and server; we use these features all the time. If you don't have any money, you might check out CMU-Tek TCP/IP from Carnegie-Mellon University (costs around $150.) Though I don't know whether it supports LPD. Good luck, Aaron ============================================================================== From: Lawrence Henry It depends on who's TCP/IP code you are running.. if it is Wollongong's version 5.1 or above you already have LPD/LPR support in the manner that you describe.. other's mileage varies.. -Larry@eco.twg.com. ============================================================================= From: Carl J Lydick sales@tgv.com ============================================================================= From: mcmahon@TGV.com (John 'Fast-Eddie' McMahon) The first question is "Which TCP/IP product are you running on your VMS box ?" The reason I ask is if you are running TGV MultiNet, take a look at your documentation at the MULTINET CONFIGURE/PRINTER command. That will tell you how to do it. Cheers! =============================================================================== From: davison@cs.utk.edu Send mail to Keith Moore (moore@cs.utk.edu). I think he has what you need. cheers, mike ============================================================================== From: ric@updike.sri.com (Richard Steinberger) The MultiNet package from TGV, Inc includes an interface to lpd. Contact them at TGV.COM. You might try anonymous FTP to get their literature or send email to Stuart Vance (vance@tgv.com). regards, ric steinberger -- =============================================================================== Mike Roch mike@oxford.ac.uk OUCS George St. Centre Tel: 0865 278800 59 George St., Oxford OX1 2BH Fax: 0865 278834
