DEC 10000 AXP Mainframe-Class Servers: 21st Century Computing Starts Today DEC 10000 AXP (TM) servers are Digital's highest performance Alpha AXP (TM) systems. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of compute-intensive, large enterprise applications, DEC 10000 AXP systems are based upon the Alpha AXP 64-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) architecture. Running at 200 megahertz, and with up to six processors, the DEC 10000 AXP system provides the fastest enterprise server performance in the industry -- at a fraction of the price of a traditional mainframe or supercomputer. The DEC 10000 AXP is the logical next step in enterprise-wide computing. It sets the standard for versatility, price/performance, power, and reliability, providing the ideal alternative to the traditional "mainframe." And, it allows you to maximize the application power available in one location, without isolating it from the rest of the enterprise. Through Network Applications Support (NAS), Digital's distributed software management architecture, standards-based software tools implement the most challenging client/server applications while supporting multiple computer vendors' platforms, protocols, and networks. Your current applications have an assured future running on a high-performance, balanced, open system platform. Plus, you can choose the operating system environment that best meets your needs: OpenVMS AXP or the UNIX (R)-based DEC OSF/1 (TM) AXP. The result is unequaled software flexibility in a single system, with outstanding investment protection. Digital's mainframe-class systems are comprehensive, integrated, packaged solutions that redefine the economics of computing. DEC 10000 AXP systems deliver the complete environment for compute-intensive and commercial applications -- today and tomorrow. Unparalleled Performance and Scalability ======================================== DEC 10000 AXP servers offer exceptional performance and expandability. These servers may be configured with up to six CPUs, each based on Digital's 64-bit RISC-based Alpha AXP architecture. Their scalability allows you to improve performance in a number of dimensions -- making the DEC 10000 AXP the ideal global server for the 90s and beyond. Up to 14 gigabytes (GB) of memory can be accommodated, more than enough for the most memory-intensive applications. For those applications where I/O is critical, up to four high-speed XMI or Futurebus+ I/O channels and eight FDDI links are supported -- thereby balancing I/O with CPU power. The CPU, memory, and I/O channels can be upgraded simply and cost-effectively with future generations of components. No other system in the industry offers the same power and versatility. DEC 10000 AXP systems support up to up to 56 GB of in-cabinet disk storage and over 10 terabytes (TB) of disk storage in a clustered configuration. You get the pure CPU power needed for large, compute-intensive applications, as well as the I/O capacity and throughput required to support large enterprise information repositories for thousands of users. Prestoserve (TM) is offered to increase the NFS (R) responsiveness of DEC 10000 AXP servers operating with DEC OSF/1 AXP. Prestoserve significantly improves NFS throughput in heavy workloads, so file servers can support more clients and provide better response times. High Availability and Reliability for Your Most Critical Work ============================================================= For the DEC 10000 AXP, high availability means the ability to continue functioning in the event of a power outage, not just maintain memory contents. Ongoing operation is ensured by the high-reliability features incorporated in the basic design. The CPU technology is based on Digital's proven high-reliability CMOS technology. ECC protection is provided on the system bus, on all memory modules, and on the 4 MB CPU write-back cache. And the power system uses several power conditioning functions to protect against high-voltage transients. An N+1 power system allows for higher system availability in the event of a power regulator failure. Systems are configured with three power regulators per cabinet, ensuring that even the most heavily configured systems can keep operating if a power regulator fails. System-level integrated UPS (Uninterruptible Power System) capability is provided to support *all* elements within the CPU and I/O expansion cabinets: CPU, memory, I/O channels and devices, and in-cabinet disk storage. The UPS sustains full processing for up to one hour. Volume shadowing and warm swap of disks ensure exceptional levels of availability. Ethernet, DSSI, CI, and FDDI OpenVMS Clustered Systems ====================================================== Clustering allows multiple computer systems to share disks and spread the computing load across multiple CPUs. Through clustering, a collection of processors and storage elements can operate as one system. OpenVMS clustered systems represent yet another way to grow DEC 10000 AXP systems. The DEC 10000 AXP server supports Ethernet-based Local Area Clusters, a low-cost avenue to resource sharing, centralized system management, and increased data storage for work group users. If your business and computing needs require clustering capability, you'll find that DSSI clustered systems offer a cost-effective, entry-level option. Should your need for availability, online storage, and performance grow, the DSSI clustered system can be integrated with a high-end, CI-based clustered system. CI clustered systems support multiple paths to provide higher availability and performance for business-critical computing. DEC 10000 AXP servers support over 10,000 gigabytes (10 terabytes) of storage in a CI clustered configuration. This is a phenomenal amount of storage, offering both growth and high availability. FDDI clustered configurations connect geographically dispersed sites into an FDDI network, which can either provide redundant data center operations or consolidate the management of the data center sites at one location. In all clustered systems -- whether the interconnect is FDDI, CI, DSSI, or Ethernet -- all data is available to all systems on the cluster. Value-Priced Configurations =========================== DEC 10000 AXP ADVANTAGE-SERVER systems offer value-priced, balanced configurations -- complete with memory, I/O controllers, disks, tape, and Network Application Support (NAS) software. They also give you the flexibility to add components, such as user licenses, as needed. Exceptional Service and Support =============================== The service and support solution choices for the DEC 10000 AXP server are the most comprehensive in the industry. Highlights include: o A formal needs assessment and operations review, which forms the basis for planning and documenting other services via the System Support Plan o Customer configuration design service, to design and document the DEC 10000 AXP configuration that best meets your application needs o Full hardware and software installation service, including an environment/logistics assessment and pre-installation planning o A consulting and training plan, which assesses start-up, migration, and training needs, and recommends the appropriate consulting and training services o Digital's premier hardware and software remedial support, which includes the dedicated customer support embodied in the Mission Critical Support Service In addition to all of these services, the DEC 10000 AXP server offers capacity and performance management services, as well as Digital System Service (24x7). Details of the support component may differ outside the USA. With more than 40,000 professionals in 450 locations around the world, Digital is singularly positioned to deliver precisely the range of services that you require.
