From: MERC::"uunet!CRVAX.SRI.COM!RELAY-INFO-VAX" 3-FEB-1993 22:39:46.46 To: INFO-VAX@kl.sri.com CC: Subj: Unclear on the concept [was: looking for remote NNTP server] Some "anonymous" person posted the following question - one of two of the same form - to INFO-VAX in the last couple of days: ***************************************** From: an8805@anon.penet.fi Newsgroups: comp.os.vms Subject: looking for remote NNTP server Message-Id: <1993Jan29.232544.11915@fuug.fi> Date: 29 Jan 93 23:16:00 GMT Sender: anon@fuug.fi (The Anon Administrator) Organization: Anonymous contact service Due to lack of disk space, I am unable to run my own NNTP server here. I have found many places which allow me to read news off of their server, but am looking for one that will let me post also (preferably somewhere in the US). If you are willing to allow remote users to post from your NNTP server please respond by e-mail to CMELARO@LOYOLA.EDU. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To find out more about the anon service, send mail to help@anon.penet.fi. Due to the double-blind system, any replies to this message will be anonymized, and an anonymous id will be allocated automatically. You have been warned. ***************************************** As you can see, it was posted through the "anonymous fowarder" at anon.penet.fi, a service that allows people to send anonymous, untraceable (but replyable) mail to individuals or newsgroups. The genius who sent THIS particular posting then included his actual return address within the text of the message. Or maybe he included someone else's address; we can't tell. But that would be even more bizarre - not that this "anonymous but signed" message isn't bizarre enough as it stands. Statement of personal policy: Except in special circumstances, none of which I can imagine applying to INFO-VAX postings, I personally find anonymous postings at best a silly waste of time, and at worst a very undesireable new feature of the cyber-world. I do not intend to reply to ANY anonymous postings on INFO-VAX (or any other general-distribution newsgroup). This is my personal policy. I will make no attempt to convince anyone else to do likewise; think about it and make your own decision. I am not interested in debating this decision and will ignore all messages, private or public, on this subject. (You don't like it? I'm available for hire, even by anonymous clients - provided they pay up front.) -- Jerry
