From: MERC::"uunet!CRVAX.SRI.COM!RELAY-INFO-VAX" 25-NOV-1992 13:08:08.84 To: "info-vax" CC: Subj: where is file XXXXX There's a lot of requests for locations of file XXXXX on the info-vax list. Here's a small list of instructions for using ARCHIE that George Galdiano posted to another list and I am reposting with his permission. Hope it's helpful. I deleted out some of the completely irrelevant FAQ's. :\/\/\/: bob :______: : (o)(o) +----------------------------------------------------------+ c: ___: | Bob George Internet : BOB@AENEAS.IMS.DISA.MIL | : _) | Disclaimer: Opinions expressed are mine and mine only.| : ,___: +----------------------------------------------------------+ : __ / /____\ ------------------------INCLUDED MESSAGE------------------------------ Subj: ftp & archie instructions It seems like every 2 weeks or so, we get a few requests to explain Archie and FTP. I came up with this note that we can email to someone asking such questions. Maybe someone can incorporate this into a FAQ list. Q: What is FTP and how do I use it? A: FTP is a File Transfer Protocol used to transfer files from one computer to another. With FTP you can download games, demos, graphics, shareware, game hints or anything else that is on an FTP site. FTP INSTRUCTIONS: 1. FTP to the ftp site. For example, FTP WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU Login as ANONYMOUS and use your email address as your password, JOE@TAMVM1, for example. 2. Go to the appropriate directory using the CD command. For example, CD PUB To backup to the previous directory, CD .. Remember that the case of the letter is important. If you use CD Pub and the directory name is pub, you will get an error message. 3. You can see what files are in that directory by using the DIR command. 4. If the file you want to download is a text file, type ASCII. If it is an executable file or a compressed file, type BINARY. Note this step is VERY important. Unless you are sure what your default type is, be sure to specify it. Command example, BINARY 5. Initiate transfer by using the GET command. GET . For example, GET KEEN4.ZIP CKEEN4.ZIP will get the file KEEN4.ZIP and put it on your computer with the name CKEEN4.ZIP. If is not specified, the original file name will be kept. 6. Repeat download procedure as desired. 7. To end the FTP session, type QUIT. 8. Type KERMIT to invoke a KERMIT Session 9. Type SET FILETYPE BINARY, if the file is executable or compressed. 10. Type SERVER to initiate Kermit's server mode 11. If using Kermit on your local computer, type SET FILETYPE BINARY If using PROCOMM, type and set the file type to BINARY. This step is very important. If you are not downloading executable files (COM or EXE) or compressed files, but are downloading TXT files, substitute ASCII for BINARY 12. If using Kermit, type GET If using PROCOMM, type Then select GET from the pop-up menu 13. If using Kermit, type FINISH If using PROCOMM, type then select FINISH from the pop-up menu 14. Once back in VM's Kermit, type Q 15. Note: You can download the file to your PC via FTP if your PC has it. 16. Logoff, uncompress the file if necessary, and you are ready to play. Q: Okay, you say, I know how to FTP and download all these great games. I'll just FTP and get KEEN4 from....from....Gee! I don't know what sites have Keen4. How can I find out which FTP site have KEEN4? A: This is where ARCHIE comes in. True it is limited in some ways, but wonderful if you know the exact or partial file name. ARCHIE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. TELNET Some US Archie sites are ARCHIE.ANS.NET ARCHIE.SURA.NET ARCHIE.UNL.EDU ARCHIE.RUTGERS.EDU Command example, TELNET ARCHIE.ANS.NET 2. If you know the exact file name, initiate a search with the PROG command. For example, PROG KEEN4.ZIP 3. If you only know a partial file name, set the search to search for substrings by issuing the command, SET SEARCH SUB Then issue the PROG command. For Example, PROG KEEN The above command will not only display FTP site containing KEEN4.ZIP, but also FTP site containing files such as PEACHYKEEN4.Z, KINGKEEN.ARC, BLOCKEENGINES.TXT and any site that contains a file with the string KEEN. 4. Type HELP while in ARCHIE if you need further instructions. 5. You can also mail a search request to ARCHIE if you do not have telnet. As far as I can tell, the search is automatically set to sub in this situation. Send a note to archie. For example, ARCHIE@ARCHIE.ANS.NET in the subject line, put your seach request. For example, PROG KEEN4 then mail your note. Anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, ARCHIE will mail you a note containing the results of your search. I love this mail feature. You don't waste much time, can print out and save the results and its faster waiting for a reply from someone on the list (usually). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Q: Hmmm...ARCHIE sounds good, but where are some good sites that contain games and such? Somtimes I just want a demo or hint and don't have a clue as to what the file is called or don't want to mess with ARCHIE. A: Good question. Here are some of my favorite FTP sites: FTP SITES: pilot.njin.net ftp.math.ksu.edu - good oak.oakland.edu msdos.archive.umich.edu - good wuarchive.wustl.edu - good ftp.ulowell.edu - demos ccu.umanitoba.ca - wolf3d stuff software.watson.ibm.com - os/2 site maintained by IBM 192.70.34.205 - ftp site where you can get a list of ftp sites caisr2.caisr.cwru.edu - has a list of MUDs. ftp.uni-kl.de - ultima solutions risc.ua.edu - solutions
