Such a device has the dev$m_dap bit set, and is assumed to "speak" DAP protocol, though without DECnet. RMS therefore fakes it out and acts as if it were talking to a network FAL connection, sending and expecting DAP packets from the device for all I/O (which gives the ability to do stuff like claim the disk is stream-only...). Thus a neat hack like translating some other protocol to/from DAP works well, and it seems well suited to making non-ods2 file structures "look like" ods2. This is a neat hack. Are there any PD or freely distributable sources for docs of the DAP protocol around? I know the protocol itself was released by DEC to the public domain (in the '70s) but am wondering if the only description to be had must be bought from Digital. Also, isn't it wonderful to have listings CDs?? ;-) Glenn Everhart@raxco.com 215 358 5875
