Zip v1.9 and UnZip v5.0 have just been announced by the Info-ZIP group. Zip compresses files and stores them in a single archive file. UnZip uncompresses the files in the archive. They are compatible with PKZIP and PKUNZIP, which are very popular in the MS-DOS world. These versions of Zip and UnZip support the long-awaited saving and restoring of VMS file attributes for VMS .ZIP files (using the -V option on the ZIP command). This ability will make the use of .ZIP files practical for VMS sites, since all VMS file types can be safely zipped and unzipped. Previous versions of Zip/UnZip created only Stream_LF files upon unzipping. I have repackaged Zip and UnZip for VMS distribution. My distribution contains all of the original source files (allowing you to build Zip and UnZip for Amiga, Atari, MS-DOS, OS/2, NT, UNIX, and VMS), plus the VMS .OBJ and .EXE files for those sites without a C compiler (either GNU C or VAX C). The .EXEs were linked under VMS v5.5-1. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zip v1.9 and UnZip v5.0 have just been posted to vmsnet.sources; they should appear there shortly. You can also get them via anonymous ftp from ftp.spc.edu; you'll need: [.MACRO32]AAAREADME.TXT [.MACRO32]LZDCMP.EXE [.MACRO32.SAVESETS]ZIP-UNZIP.BCK_Z You can also get them via e-mail by sending the following commands in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@WKUVX1.BITNET: SEND ZIP-UNZIP SEND FILESERV_TOOLS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note that the ZIP-UNZIP package is distributed via e-mail in VMS_SHARE format and it consists of 50 60-block files. I expect requests for this package to be heavy, so traffic may tend to back up on the BITNET lines. Please be patient and allow several days for all the parts to arrive---do *not* ask for multiple copies of the package. Also, before requesting ZIP-UNZIP, try sending the command DIR ZIP-UNZIP to FILESERV@WKUVX1.BITNET to make sure your address is readable by FILESERV; I'm getting tired of handling bounces of these huge packages because people's return addresses are not right. If you never get a response to the DIR ZIP-UNZIP request, then send mail to me with a valid address and I'll forward it out to you.
