VAX SIG tape index Index Status Update: After a break, the tape index is back. For this tape, I did not generate a cumulative index, partly because of the missing tapes (which I may get indexed some day...), and partly because so many large submissions are resubmitted in their entirety that the cumulative index requires many disk blocks/printed pages for redundant information. Due to the trend toward deeper directory trees and longer file names, the index has been changed from 3-column format to 2-columns. For this index, the increase in disk space is about 350 blocks; however, many file names were severly truncated in the 3-column version, so it seems worth the extra space. The algorithm for generating the keywords had eliminated any digits, which caused words like LN03 to change to LN, then be dismissed as noise. This has now been changed to preserve such words. I'm still looking at a few other changes to the keywording which I held back on to get copies of the index out sooner. This directory contains the following files: o INDEX.DOC - A brief description of the process used to create the indexes. o INDEX88B.LIS - An index of the VAX88B* save sets. (On some tapes, this file may be replaced by INDEX88B.LZS.) The index is organized by keyword (extracted from text files). For each keyword, files on the tape containing the keyword are listed. I have omitted the leading "[8" from the file names in an attempt to fit more of the longer file names in the two column format. o INDEX88B.LZS - A compressed version of the file INDEX88B.LIS. Use the following DCL commands to expand the file: $ LZD = "$dev:[VAX000.INDEX]LZDCM" $ LZD -B -X 0 -M 16 -V INDEX88B.LZS INDEX88B.LIS o CONDIT.LIS - A list of keywords that were eliminated from the index if they did not appear somewhere in the file name. o NOISE.LIS - A list of keywords that were unconditionally eliminated from the index. Suggestions for improving the index are welcome and should be sent to: Tom Gerhard Advanced Data Management 15 Main Street Kingston, NJ 08528 Page 2 (609) 799-4600 If there are submissions from older tapes that have been superceded, please drop me a note so that I can remove them from the cumulative index.
