Since posts appear here from time to time inquiring about availability of precompiled binaries so that sites lacking a C compiler can get News up and running, here's a summary of what I know is available at the moment. If anyone is willing to make binaries compiled for a TCP package not listed here available, please let me know, so I can leave a pointer in the [ANU_News.Dstribution] directory here. (For that matter, if you'd rather, you can put the binaries up for ftp here, if you don't have a local anonymous ftp area.) CMU IP - Object modules compiled using VAXC 3.2 and VMS 5.4 are available here by anonymous ftp to genetics.upenn.edu in the ZIP archive Anon_Root:[ANU_News.Distribution]News61b8_CMU_Objs.Zip. I'm not able to link or test them here, so I'd appreciate any feedback on their utility to CMU users. DECnet (nntp transport) - binaries distibuted in the Wollongong or UCX ZIP archives mentioned here should work, since they are linked to static object libraries for TCP calls, so shouldn't need any nonstandard shareable image libraries around. (Actually, the nntp_dec*.exe from any of these archives should work; you only need to worry about News.Exe and NNTP_X*.Exe.) Multinet TCP - Binaries distributed in the News_Dist ZIP archive are compiled and linked to Multinet's shareable image (version ??) under VMS 5.5-2 (as far as I know; Bob Sloane - please correct me if I'm wrong.) UCX TCP - Binaries compiled and linked to UCX 1.3 (VAXC 3.2, VMS 5.4) are available here (genetics.upenn.edu) in the ZIP archive Anon_Root:[ANU_News.Distribution]News61b8_UCX_Exes.Zip. Since I don't actually run UCX, I haven't tested them well, but News.Exe runs under Wollongong's UCX emulation, so I expect there's nothing badly amiss. I apologize for the old version of UCX, but my access to UCX via CSLG is sporadic; I'll try to upgrade to a newer version when I can find a ConDist CD someone is willing to loan out for a bit. The object modules from this build are also available here in Anon_Root:[ANU_News.Distribution]News61b8_UCX_Objs.Zip, in case someone wants to link them locally to a newer version of UCX. Wollongong TCP - Binaries compiled and linked using VAXC 3.2, VMS 5.4, and Wollongong's PathWay API 1.0 object library are available here (genetics.upenn.edu) in the ZIP archive Anon_Root:[ANU_News.Distribution]News61b8_WIN_Exes.Zip. These are the images I run here, so I can attest to the proper function of News.Exe, NNTP_TCPWINMultinet.Exe, and Cachem.Exe pretty regularly. Since these are linked to TWG's static object library, rather than to the shareable image library, I expect that they will work with at least the few most recent versions of WIN/TCP, though if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know. The binaries compiled here are derived from my working sources, and each ZIP archive contains a file PatchList.H, which lists the patches I have applied to the 6.1b8 distribution, so anyone who picks up the binaries can see what they're getting. If someone has a need for binaries using a particular set of patches, I'll be happy to discuss it with them, but I can't promise to send out customized versions to all comers. Similarly, if someone needs binaries but doesn't have ftp access, I'll try to make arrangements to mail a UUEncoded version of the ZIP archive if all else fails, but please try an automated ftpmail service first. As a general point, I'd recommend that sites which plan to support News should probably to get a free compiler like GNU C or VAXC via CSLG, so each site can maintain its own tailored version of News, can incorporate patches easily, and can have sources and binaries synchronized for debugging. Since that's not always feasible, I'll try to keep the binaries available here up to date. If anyone has any suggestions for ways to improve on what's here or comments on its utility, I'd be happy to hear them.
