LUG Advocate Newsletter
January 30, 1997

I don't know about y'all but it has been a tough January for me! :-} Here is the latest and greatest, some of it is really good stuff... so here goes:
Session note CDs are on their way!*
Who's Who...*
Project items*
New LUGs!
Mailing List Utilization Policy status
Board of Director's LUG Report

(* These items may require an action from you - please read carefully and respond.)

I am going to start getting nasty if I never hear from anyone. Growl, growl, growl! :-} It is hard to make things happen when there is little or no participation. To be successful- to help your LUG and other new LUGs, I am going to need your help and involvement. I know it's tough to find the time, but I want to see things change, I want to help - your participation however is a necessary ingredient or this is all just a waste of time! Even if none of the items below require your action or stimulate you to volunteer, please just drop me a line and let me know how you are doing. Shoot, it would be nice to know you are receiving this information! :-}

Keep watching your mail, I hope to have some very exciting news for you soon...

Session Note CDs

The DECUS staff is busy sending out the DECUS '96/Anaheim Session note CD-ROMs to all of the LUGs. You should be seeing these CD-ROMs in the mail soon. This was a request in Anaheim and I'm happy to say not only will you see them now, but you will start seeing them after each event!

The staff is sending the CD-ROMs to the names and addresses specified on the DECUS web page, URL: http://www.decus.org/decus/lugs/licensed-lugs.html

If this information is incorrect, please send a note to Tricia Meehan, "meehan@decus.org" with the corrected name and address. Be prepared for the Web page to change accordingly. Thanks.

Who's Who

That takes me to the next issue at hand. It has come to my attention that LUG Steering committees may have changed quite a bit since the LUG agreements were signed. That's okay, but we would like an updated list of the existing LUGs and their Steering committees. Please send me a list of your steering committee (and their particulars, i.e. e-mail address) for your LUG by 2/28/97. (BTW, this list does not have to perfect or cast in stone, we are just looking for an update.) If I do not hear from a LUG we will have to assume the LUG is no longer functioning.

If I don't hear anything, I will attempt to contact the LUGs currently on the list, but it sure would make my life much easier if you would just drop me a line. :-} You can reach me at "catcott@decus.org" or at "catcottj@pios.com". THANK YOU!

Project Items

In December I sent a list of the 33 LUG support project items (identified in the Anaheim LUG meeting) to y'all asking for your input on the top 10 priorities on the list. I heard back from 5 LUGs (of 62). From this feedback, I was able to define 5 areas of commonality:

I will be working with Jeff Borkowski and Marie Chiarameda from Digital on these 5 items. In particular the last item, support from local Digital offices and/or Digital business partners in the form of counterparts and financial support is a significant issue for all. This one is going to get a lot of our attention.

Now, besides these 5 items, there are a few others which I feel merit time and effort:

Web Page (infrastructure)
There have been lots of ideas bandied about for information which could be provided via the Web - Session content, newlsetter content, FAQs, etc. I think this would benefit many of the LUGs. If you (or someone in your LUG) is interested in: building Web Pages, defining the content, developing ideas for the Web Page please send me a note at "catcottj@pios.com" or "catcott@decus.org". I would like to get this committee up and going via a conference call (long distance charges will be covered) in mid-February so please let me know as soon as possible. If you are not going to have a LUG meeting between now and mid-February, that's fine. We will take additions to our group at any time. I just need a nucleus to get started.

Adopt-a-LUG
There are several individuals interested in starting new LUGs or re-igniting old ones. These folks have lots of questions and they need someone to give them ideas, talk to, generally help them get started. Unfortunately, there are more of them than there are of me! :-} If you are interested in helping one of these emerging LUGs get started, please send me a note. If you are a LUG which is trying to re-emerge and you would like some help, also send me a note.

New LUGs!

There are two new LUGs starting up,

University of California at Davis
Paul Waterstraat
waterstraat@geology.ucdavis.edu

Witchita, KS
Dar Schumann
darnkat@feist.com

Welcome aboard y'all!

Mailing List Utilization Policy Status

This one has dragged on long enough, huh? Well, at the Board Meeting 1/17/97, the Board asked me to make two minor changes and then it is done. I'll be sending out those changes to the Board today. Hopefully, by this time next week, I'll be able to say the policy is done!

If you would like to do a mailing utilizing the DECUS membership list for your area, contact Paula Morin at "morin@decus.org".

Board of Director's LUG Report

There was a meeting of the DECUS Board of Directors, January 17-18, 1997. I was asked to make a report to the Board. (go to report) It is also posted in BOARD_PUBLIC.

If you read BOARD_PUBLIC, you will see as part of the meeting minutes, the Board passed a motion providing me with project money. Over the next month, I am going to be determining how to best utilize this money. If you have an idea or suggestion, please let me know.

Well that's it. I know this is long, but I needed to get the info out. I assume you would rather get one long memo than 6 short ones...if that's not true, let me know! :-}
