This is a routine posting you will see from time to time on Info-ZIP-Announce. The official home for the Info-ZIP utilities is ftp.uu.net in pub/archiving/zip. Anonymous ftp can be used to retrieve the utilities. Sources and many flavors of executables for the utilities can also be found on most of the large archive sites (SimTel, Garbo, etc.). Recipients of the Info-ZIP-announce and Info-ZIP lists are, by definition, considered beta testers. Beta versions of the Info-ZIP utilities can be retrieved by anonymous ftp from quest.jpl.nasa.gov:/beta. Beta versions are made available for testing purposes only and should not be redistributed, nor should this site be publicized. Beta testers should also be aware that there may be dangerous bugs in the code; for example, trying to extract a damaged archive has resulted in the user's disk being filled on more than one occasion. Don't test beta code on anything important, and be sure to report any new bugs. Bug reports should be mailed to Zip-Bugs@LISTS.WKU.EDU, a closed list for the Info-ZIP developers. Zip v2.01 and UnZip v5.1 and higher are compatible with PKZip v2.04G (and 2.04C and 2.04E). I finished moving the beta stuff yesterday morning and would have announced it yesterday if not for some (imagine Monty Python pseudo- French accent) outraaaaaaaageous PNG hacking last night. The beta stuff is also available via http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/OLD/beta/, though that's likely to change, at least for those who don't subscribe to the info-zip-announce list--I'll probably add an index.html with instructions on how to join the beta program, warnings about what might happen to your hard disk, and no links. Direct ftp access will still work, of course, and http URLs directly to the beta zipfiles (as published in the announce- ments!) will also work. Btw, things are "hidden" under the OLD subdirectory so that (1) they don't get mirrored all over the place and (2) they aren't quite so obvious to random folks stumbling upon the site for the first time. The main site, for those who haven't noticed, is now at: http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/ ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/ Many, many thanks to Mark Adler (and, unknowingly, JPL) for being our host for so many years. Mark is still providing http redirects to the new site so that the transition will be as painless as possible. ALSO NOTE: The encryption stuff is all read-protected! Until we find an overseas site that we can use for both the sources and various zip+ encryption executables, there will be NO access to the zcrypt stuff. Sorry, but Walnut Creek is a big site and could get into big trouble (even though the encryption is weak enough to be granted an export license). I'm still updating things and finding problems here and there, so if you come across a broken link or other problem (aside from the zcr* stuff), let us know on the zip-bugs list. Finally: yes, we *do* plan to get multi-volume archives supported THIS year. :-) The move delayed 5.3 somewhat, but the last remaining feature was just supplied by Christian, so starting with 5.30i we can spend a month fixing bugs and polishing and then release it. Then multi-volume support is the first item on the 6.0 list. Cheers, -- Greg Roelofs newt@pobox.com http://pobox.com/~newt/ Newtware, Info-ZIP, PNG Group, U Chicago, Philips Research, ...
