NT 5.0's 64-bit support will only include a limited number of new system calls to read/write/copy memory using 64-bit addresses; the existing system calls will not change in NT 5.0. * This is in contrast to the "whole new version of NT" which is being developed for P7 which (apparently) WILL change the O/S to be based on 64-bit APIs. * My notes from the PDC regarding 64-bit support: Promoted as Very Large Memory (VLM) Maximum of 32 Gb of virtual memory; the standard 4 Gb, plus an additional 28 Gb with VAs from 4Gb to 28Gb Limited APIs to access the VLM area; alloc/free, commit/reserve, read/write, sharing between VLM addresses No paging of 64-bit addresses (they didn't want to re-write the paging subsystem)
