The problem manifests itself in the form of 04/19/00 (Defect List Error) or 03/31/00 (Medium Format Corrupted) errors under varying conditions. Power Management characteristics are set on mode page 0x0D. In order to shut of power management, byte 3 of this page must be set to 0x00 from its "on" state 0x02 and mode selected with the SP (Save Pages) bit set to 1 in order to save the page. *** Caution *** If a device currently exhibits this problem, a power cycle should bring the drive back up into a normal (ready) state. If a few power cycles do not bring the drive out of this 04/19 error state then the drive will have to be formatted and all data will be lost. IF THE DRIVE IS MODE SELECTED IN THIS ERRANT STATE, THE FORMAT WILL BE CORRUPTED AND ALL DATA WILL BE LOST. *** Caution *** RESOLUTION / WORKAROUND: ----------------------- In order to accomplish this in the field, a set of utilities are provided to allow mode page manipulation. These utilities distinguish between the aforementioned variants and other SCSI Peripherals as well as verifying that an 04/19 or 03/31 condition does not currently exist on the device. Operating systems currently supported are : VMS Version 5.xx, Version 6.xx; OSF, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. ***NOTE*** Any drive faulting hard with the 04/19/00 error code after power cycle are to be treated as a regular failure and should be handled as normal service procedure. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: -------------------- Currently, tools have been developed for VMS and Windows 3.1/ Windows 95 and a new version of an existing OSF/UNIX utility: SCU is capable of performing the desired changes. Both VMS and PC based solutions have been developed to shut off power management provided that the device is one of those listed at the beginning of this document, and that it is not currently in an 04/19 or 03/31 state. With each platform, as expected, there are differerent provisions. Under VMS, the drives must be directly accessible by the SCSI controller, not passed through an HSJ or HSC controller and must not be in a striped set (where the controller sees multiple devices as one logical device) as in many RAID configurations. The HSJ/HSC cannot be present because of its inability to pass SCSI commands through from the system to the drive. The PC solution must be run on an ASPI compliant host adapter such as an ADAPTEC. Finally, the OSF/UNIX solution cannot be automated, therefore each step needs to be outlined and followed to the letter in order to insure success. ** Revision Control Note ** All drives modified in the field using these or any other solutions for this condition must be marked with a permanent green marker in the lower left hand corner on the front of the SBB. ** Revision Control Note ** The Utilities and Instrutions can be found at: OSF SOLUTION: BABAGI::LCA:[SPECS.RZ29B]SCU VMS SOLUTION: Version 5.xx BABAGI::LCA:[SPECS.RZ29B]MODEVMS5.EXE VMS SOLUTION: Version 6 and greater BABAGI::LCA:[SPECS.RZ29B]MODEVMS6.EXE PC SOLUTION: Windows 3.1, Windows 95 with ASPI Compliant Controller (ex: ADAPTEC AHA1540) BABAGI::LCA:[SPECS.RZ29B]MODEPC.EXE INSTRUCTIONS TO ALL SOLUTIONS: BABAGI::LCA:[SPECS.RZ29B]SOLUTION.HLP **** DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY ****
