Application developers who have access to the Internet can use these two systems to test, qualify, or port their software for the Alpha AXP architecture. Other Internet users interested in Alpha AXP computing are invited to log on and evaluate these systems. In the first two days of availability, initial Internet response resulted in well over 1000 accounts from about 500 organizations being set up on these Alpha AXP systems. One DEC 4000 AXP system (Internet address: axposf.pa.dec.com) is running the DEC OSF/1 for AXP V1.2 UNIX operating system. The other AXP system (Internet address: axpvms.pa.dec.com) has the OpenVMS AXP V1.5 operating system installed. These systems can be reached either via telnet or rlogin. To register for an account, Internet users connect to the desired machine, log in as axpguest (no password), and answer the short qualifying questionnaire. Users are asked to read all information in the motd/login banner and comply with all rules for machine usage/restrictions. Customers with questions about their accounts should send mail to Internet address: axposf-root@dec.pa.com for the DEC OSF/1 for AXP system and to Internet address: axpvms-system@pa.dec.com for the OpenVMS AXP system. The Internet system -- linking more than 1.7 million host computers on 11,000 networks in 50 countries -- has more than 5 million users. The system is tied into most public and private electronic messaging services, expanding the user population able to exchange electronic mail to about 15 million people. The system is doubling annually in users, networks, hosts, and traffic. Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Massachusetts, is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services. Digital pioneered and leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor computing. Digital and its business partners deliver the power to use the best integrated solutions - from desktop to data center - in open information environments. #### -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOLUME 3 NUMBER PAGE 6 Digital Equipment Corporation Product: DEC 3000 Model 300L AXP Workstation Overview: The DEC 3000 Model 300L AXP workstation uses Digital's 100-MHz DECchip 21064 Alpha AXP microprocessor, making it the highest performing workstation available today for under $5,000. The Model 300L capitalizes on Digital's 64-bit architecture to provide a performance-oriented platform for applications that use 2D graphics. The workstation is fully binary-compatible with all of Digital's Alpha AXP systems. Combining performance, expandability, and 1024 x 768 resolution at a low price, the Model 300L is the ideal migration path for customers who now use the VAXstation 4000 VLC and the entry-level Personal DECstation platforms. The DFWLUG BBS also hosts multiple phone lines and currently supports V.32 and will shortly support V.42 modems. The DFWLUG BBS has been in continious operation since 1991 and is one of the few DECUS oriented BBS's in the United States. We provide a menu-driven environment that features VAXnotes, USEnetNEWS (1300+NEWSgroups), DECUS UUCP (for E-Mail and communications anywhere on the INTERNET), file exchange, and indexes of the DECUS Software libraries (with over 10,000 programs) available from DECUS, Internet fileservers and the DFWLUG Tape Librarian. Menus can be bypassed if you are interested in learning or using OpenVMS/DCL or POSIX/Unix/shell commands. Computer Based Instruction courses allow users to expand their knowledge and take advantage of more complex features and resources or to learn new computer skills. Programs, source code and binary files for all models of computer systems are distributed world wide via USEnet NEWS in a variety of standard encoding formats (Primarily UUENCODED). Sources for UUENCODE and UUDECODE are available on our fileserver. The USEnet NEWS expiration on source and binary file NEWSgroups on the DFWLUG BBS is 12 months. This assures capture and the ability to extract all of the posted program parts even if they take several days/weeks to be posted from the source. The DFWLUG BBS offers the news readers selected newsgroups from alt, austin, comp, dfw, news, rec, sci, and vmsnet news hierarchies for over 1300+ choices and over 800MBytes of online NEWS and over 15MBytes of new NEWS each day (you just can't read it all;-) C-Kermit, X/Y modem, and Reflections protocols are supported for upload and download. In addition to 1300+ newsgroups and extended archives, the DFWLUG BBS has set up a permanent fileserver for many files of interest to our members. Send E-mail to "dfwlugsrv@fallout.lonestar.org" and in the body use the command LIST and HELP. You'll receive a listing of files available from our server via the E-mail Fileserver. Membership in the DFWLUG and attending our User Group meetings has always been free but a private account for the BBS is a modest $10.00 per year and available to students and professionals in the DFW area.
