|1.  The system has VMS PALcode 5.44, and I'm told during boot that the minimum 
|_supported_ PALcode is 5.48.  The installation docs warned me that I might 
|have to update the PALcode, but it refered me to the "manuals that came with 
|your AXP hardware" for instructions on how to do this.  I can find no such 
|information in the manuals that came with the system.  Is this sort of update 
|available via DEC's Internet system(s)? (www.digital.com, etc.)

There should be a firmware CDROM that comes with the VMS CDROMs.  You want
firmware CDROM V2.8.  You upgrade the firmware by:

>>> BOOT -FLAG 0,80 DKA400 ! or whatever your CDROM is
Bootfile: [DEC2000]DEC2000_V1_3.EXE
UPD-> UPDATE SYSTEM

after the ROM is updated and verified, you power-cycle to load the new
PAL code.

|2.  I also get an error during boot about incomplete IRQ configuration 
|information for EISA slot 00000001 (this is the Compaq Q/Vision VGA card).  I 
|ran the ECU disk that came with the software/media CDROM kit (it was version 
|1.4), and according to it, all of the parameters for slot 1 are there. (I 
|considered doing a save of the same information, but I didn't).  This system 
|works fine under NT, and it *does* boot and run VMS 6.1 okay; is this related 
|to item 1. above?

I think that this is due to item 1 above.

|3.  After the 1000 or lines of text scroll off the screen & I attempt to log 
|in at the console, the system echos the various escape sequences that SET 
|TERMINAL/INQUIRE does, and then comes up as an unknown terminal type.  Isn't 
|there any way to have OpenVMS treat the screen as a VTXXX-equivalent device? 
|(I figure it would be a little difficult to add "device=c:\openvms\ansi.sys" 
|to my CONFIG.SYS file :-)

or whatever you want it to be.
