Below is an excerpt about the patches being available on the Internet. VMS patches should be available ~August 17. Seems someone noticed that save-sets have problems surviving ftp, so they're being converted to self-extracting archives to make them fixed 512-byte record files. Digital's Commercial Internet Gateway: Software Patches HIGHLIGHTS o U.S. users can access software corrections directly across the Internet, saving time and money SERVICE DESCRIPTION As businesses everywhere establish connections with the Internet, the option to simply "pull it over the net" grows more popular every day. Software corrections are now sharing in this trend, and beginning this month, Digital service and warranty users in the U.S. will be able to access ULTRIX and DEC OSF/1 patches via the Internet; OpenVMS patches will soon follow. This service is part of Digital's Commercial Internet Gateway Services, which provide Internet users with easy-to-use, cost effective network services. If you are a service user, you can use your Customer Obligation ID and DSNlink access code to log onto a system via the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and pull patches over the Internet -- rather than logging a call to a Customer Support Center and waiting for the patch to be shipped. To help you find patches designed to solve the problems you have identified in your own environment, an online search utility is available through the World-Wide Web interface. It allows for keyword searches through the release notes, patch descriptions, and READMEs for all patches. An anonymous FTP service providing access to documents and files intended for use by Internet users-at-large will also be available. Please refer to the Resources section for access information on both the online search utility and the FTP service. This software patch service is available in the U.S. (expansion to worldwide service is planned). Access to the World-Wide Web service and the anonymous FTP service is available now on a worldwide basis. REQUIREMENTS If you have a Digital software product support contract, you can access the service by using your Customer Obligation ID and DSNlink access code. If you do not have DSNlink, you can contact Digital to request Internet FTP access. In this case, only the DSNlink key will be generated for the given Obligation ID. Connections via UUCP will not currently work with this service. RESOURCES Questions can be directed to 1-800-354-9000; ask for the DSNlink hotline and specify "Questions on Internet Access to Patches." For more information regarding either the FTP patch service or Digital's World-Wide Web server for services, send mail to: info@service.digital.com. To access the online search utility under the World-Wide Web, send mail to: www.service.digital.com. (the URL is: http://www.service.digital.com/home.html). Software patches can be reached via FTP from node ftp.service.digital.com. The anonymous FTP service will also be accessible on node ftp.service.digital.com. You can access these files by signing in at the FTP prompt with the username "anonymous." __________ OSF/1 is a registered trademark of the Open Software Foundation, Inc.
