Happy DECUSing! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOLUME 5 NUMBER 10 PAGE 3 Digital - PC Business Unit unveils interactive home page on Internet {Livewire, Worldwide News, 30-Aug-95} Digital has formally launched its Digital PC home page on the Internet, designed for prospective customers, key partners, and users and resellers of the company's PC products around the world. Exploiting the latest interactive technology, the Digital PC World Wide Web site at http://www.pc.digital.com is fast, easy to navigate and highly intuitive. The home page is powered by Digital's Prioris HX 590DP PC servers, the same servers supporting Microsoft's Windows 95 Launch Web site and last week's online event on Aug. 24. At the Digital PC home page, a magazine-like format features vivid graphics and logical, intuitive text for obtaining late-breaking news and product information, customer service and support, free software device driver updates and details about purchasing Digital PCs. The Digital PC home page also includes a variety of HotLinks to additional Digital Web sites, partner sites and other useful resources at several popular Web sites on the Internet. Digital will celebrate the unveiling of its new Web site with quarterly drawings, offering a Digital HiNote notebook computer to lucky site visitors randomly chosen from those who register in the home page's online "Guest Book." Site visitors from locations where such a giveaway is prohibited by law are not eligible for the drawing. Visitors can also sign up to participate in future online electronic surveys, enabling Digital to conduct "just-in-time" customer and market research. The company plans to offer a variety of other contests in the future and activities of interest to the broad range of Digital PC users visiting the company's Web site. Five key sections make for smooth 'surfing' The Digital PC home page includes five main areas for fast, simple navigation and useful, extensive PC information available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visitors can click on a variety of topics, updated regularly, to obtain all the latest information on Digital's personal computer products, services, promotions, partnerships and even career opportunities: o Newswire: Highlights breaking news about key partnerships and Digital's full line of personal computer products and services with an easy-to-use news index. The section also includes current press coverage about Digital PCs -- commercial and retail desktops, mobile computers, and PC servers -- such as product reviews and announcements of new offerings. o Products: Includes background information on Digital's entire range of personal computer products and details on all the latest developments within Digital's PC lines. o Customer Support: Provides customers with the location of service centers, warranty information, reference documents such as background papers, and an opportunity to offer feedback on Digital's service and support programs. o PC Sales: Supplies customers with a listing of where to buy Digital PCs, including retail locations in the United States, U.S. government resellers and additional resellers worldwide. o Employment: Lists current job opportunities within Digital's PC Business Unit, qualifications required and details about how interested parties can obtain additional information or send their resumes online via the Internet to apply for these positions. In addition to helping visitors find Digital PC-specific information, the new home page includes a sixth key area called HotLinks. HotLinks provides speedy access to related points of interest such as other Digital Web Sites, where visitors can "surf" for financial and investor information as well as instructions for ordering Digital solutions online; partner sites, such as Microsoft's new Windows 95 Internet home page or Intel's home page; or instantly link to a variety of entertainment, business and trade sites. HotLinks highlights include Digital sites, partner sites, and sites for navigating the Internet, such as Netsurfer; plus travel and business home pages and news and information services. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOLUME 5 NUMBER 10 PAGE 4 Digital - Provides 'PEEK' at NetView for Windows NT {Livewire, Worldwide News, 11-Sep-95} Digital has shipped the third field test version of the Windows NT port of POLYCENTER Manager on NetView. The company expects to distribute more than 10,000 free copies of its POLYCENTER Early Experience Kit (PEEK) to users and software application developers by the end of September. The POLYCENTER Early Experience Kit contains an evaluation version of NetView for Windows NT on Intel platforms along with demonstration software and product presentations. In addition, the PEEK contains product descriptions from 11 software vendors committed to integrating their network and system management products with NetView for Windows NT. POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT fills a significant gap in the market by delivering the UNIX version of the NetView network management platform to Windows NT. A full-function, 32-bit enterprise network manager, the product is a port of NetView for Digital UNIX and AIX. It implements the Windows 95 user interface style and comes with documentation on a single CD-ROM. Network administrators may immediately order the PEEK for NetView for Windows NT at no cost by faxing requests to (508) 952-4496 or by sending email to pnvnt@took.enet.dec.com. Additional information on Digital's POLYCENTER family of system and network management products is available on Digital's Internet World Wide Web home page at http://www.digital.com/info/polycenter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOLUME 5 NUMBER 10 PAGE 5 Digital - DECUS U.S. Chapter approves amendments to bylaws {Livewire, Worldwide News, 13-Sep-95} The Board of Directors of the U.S. Chapter of DECUS, the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society, has announced the results of its recent referendum ballot to amend the organization's bylaws. The referendum ballot, proposed by the Chapter's Board of Directors, and approved by over 97 percent of the organization's membership who participated in the vote, removes all reference in the bylaws to the chapter's now-defunct Management Council. The Management Council was dissolved by the Board during a reorganization in December of 1993. Passage of the amendment brings the bylaws in line with the chapter's current operating structure. The vote, which takes effect immediately, removes the chair and vice chair of the Management Council as the only voting members on the chapter's Board (other than the delegate appointed by Digital) that are not elected by the Chapter's general membership. The vote also expands the number of elected members on the Board of Directors by two, replacing the Management Council seats. This keeps the size of the Board the same at nine voting members, eight elected by the chapter's membership and one appointed by Digital. The chapter's Executive Director remains, as before, a non-voting member of the Board. The two vacancies created on the Board by this action will be filled by the chapter president with confirmation by the rest of the Board, in accordance with the organization's bylaws. Appointees to the Board will fill the remainder of terms set to expire on June 30, 1996 and June 30, 1997. The U.S. Chapter of DECUS, the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society, is an association of information technology professionals interested in the products, services, and technologies of Digital Equipment Corp. and related vendors. The association's purpose is to promote the unimpeded exchange of information, with the goal of helping its members and their organizations to be more successful. The chapter provides each member with means to enhance their professional development, forums for technical training, mechanisms for obtaining up-to-date information, advocacy programs, and opportunities for informal disclosure and interaction with professional colleagues of like interests. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOLUME 5 NUMBER 10 PAGE 6 Digital - Steals spotlight at AIM Hot Iron Awards {Livewire, Worldwide News, 19-Sep-95} Once again, Digital has taken top honors in AIM Technology's 1995 Hot Iron Awards announced at UNIX Expo in New York City. The company received six AIM performance and price/performance awards for its Alpha and PC server and workstation products. "Once again, the latest results of the AIM Hot Iron suite of independent, unbiased benchmarks demonstrate that Alpha is the ideal UNIX platform for workstation and enterprise server environments. "Our customers and partners are the real beneficiaries of our ongoing success in providing the industry's most cost-effective systems." "This third consecutive AIM Hot Iron Award for Digital's Prioris PC servers is a clear validation of our product line's balanced system design that provides maximum server performance at PC price points," said Duane Dickhut, vice president of Digital's PC server product line. "Digital's commitment to world-class performance, reliability and engineering excellence provides our customers with an industry-leading value proposition that enables them to reap a maximum return for their technological investment." Since 1981, AIM Technology has provided vendors and end users comprehensive, unbiased performance testing to help users determine the best fit between their application needs and available systems and configurations.
