Why is the mail notification node-specific, and not =user-specific like REPLY for instance? Because not all clusters are homogenous to the point of sharing both the user authorization file and the mail profile file, and if these two files aren't shared, if a user receives mail on one node, he won't necessarily find the new message automatically when he runs mail on another node in the cluster. =In my opinion it should =be irrelevant to mail on which node of the cluster I'm currently =working. Is it possible to change this? Yes, via the logical name MAIL$SYSTEM_FLAGS in the system table in executive mode. You define it to be a number. The bits in that number indicate: Bit Meaning --- ----------------------------------------------------------- 0 Mail sent to any node in the cluster is delivered directly to the mail file specified by the combination of the user's default device/directory in the user authorization file and the mail directory specified in the mail profile. If this bit isn't set, then mail addressed to another node in the cluster will be sent to that node via DECnet for local delivery. 1 Mail notification is sent to all nodes in the cluster (this is the bit you want to set) 2 Include the time of delivery in the mail delivery notification broadcast So you want to define MAIL$SYSTEM_FLAGS to be either 2, 3, 6, or 7. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carl J Lydick | INTERnet: CARL@SOL1.GPS.CALTECH.EDU | NSI/HEPnet: SOL1::CARL Disclaimer: Hey, I understand VAXen and VMS. That's what I get paid for. My understanding of astronomy is purely at the amateur level (or below). So unless what I'm saying is directly related to VAX/VMS, don't hold me or my organization responsible for it. If it IS related to VAX/VMS, you can try to hold me responsible for it, but my organization had nothing to do with it.
