Article 2548 of alt.sys.pdp11:
I did answer my own question about the root password late last night.
Here is what I did:

zcat unix_v7_rl.dsk.gz | strings | grep root: > pdp11.passwd
Crack pdp11.passwd

Took about 5 minutes to get the answer using Crack version 5. :)
