<<< VAXAXP::NOTES$:[NOTES$LIBRARY]VMSNOTES.NOTE;1 >>> -< VAX and Alpha VMS - Digital Internal Use Only >- ================================================================================ Note 791.2 STABACKIT and LDFAIL 6.2-1h3 2 of 4 STAR::HAMMOND "Charlie Hammond -- ZKO3-04/S23 -- dt" 47 lines 26-JUN-1997 14:28 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE QAR THIS!!! I'm guessing that this is a generic problem with all of the limited hardware release kits. (1H1, 1H2, 1H3). I'm also guessing that your customer used the VMSINSTAL kit to update a V6.2, V6.2-1H1, or V6.2-1H2 system to V6.2-1H3. i.e. they did NOT do a new installation. Yes? Please let me know if this is correct or not! It appeasr that the VMSINSTAL update kit does NOT provide the new product description file, [VMS$COMMON]DEC-AXPVMS-VMS-V0602-1H3-1.PCSI$DESCRIPTION. As a result, SYS$SYSTEM:AXPVMS$PCSI_INSTALL_MIN will be using the old description file, [VMS$COMMON]DEC-AXPVMS-VMS-V0602--1.PCSI$DESCRIPTION. (or [VMS$COMMON]DEC-AXPVMS-VMS-V0602-1H1-1.PCSI$DESCRIPTION, or [VMS$COMMON]DEC-AXPVMS-VMS-V0602-1H2-1.PCSI$DESCRIPTION) So the "standalone" system will not have the new hardwre support and you will get the "unable to locate SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_1105.EXE" errror. Obviously, there is no reasonable way to fix the V6.2-1H3 kits that are in the field. The QAR requested above is to ensure that we don't make this same [stupid!] mistake in future limited hardware release kits. WORKAROUNDS. (1) If you copy [VMS$COMMON]DEC-AXPVMS-VMS-V0602-1H3-1.PCSI$DESCRIPTION from the CD to the operating system (same directory on both devices) you will then be able to run SYS$SYSTEM:AXPVMS$PCSI_INSTALL_MIN and get correct results. THIS IS THE PREFERED WORKAROUND because it will ensure that any other files added in V6.2-1H3 also get copied to the "standalone" system. (2) If you copy [VMS$COMMON.SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_1105.EXE from the CD to the "standalone" system (again, same directory on both devices) you should be able to boot the "standalone" system. THESE WORKAROUNDS HAVE NOT BEEN TESTED. I can see no way that they would make things worse. They should fix the problem; I would very much appreciate your feedback when you try them. NOTE: On systems which did a full, new installation of V6.2-1H3 this problem should not be seen. The new product description file is included on the full installation. (NOTE: I will be out of my office from noon on Friday, 27-July-1997, until Monday, 07-July. I mention this so you will not think I'm ignoring you if I do not respond to your answers before then.)
