Instead it jamms the value to 1, and continues. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. And I disavow it. But I had stopped doing graphics by then... so I have an excuse - sort-of. What you need to do now is to boot interactive, and set NOAUTO to 1. This will prevent device autoconfiguration, and only the devices needed to boot will be loaded. You can then make your change and reboot. The DECwindows folks make you need to log in, hack a logical name into SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM to stop DECwindows from starting. I may risk starting a holy war to try and restore the previous behavior for V7.2. Frederick G.
