Step 1: Downloading the files

The Navigator Gold with Java V3.03 software is available for the Alpha platform as a compressed self-extracting file. There is also a separate file (not compressed) containing the Java class libraries.

You must download the new Java class library file to run Java in V3.03!

Step 2: Expanding the self-extracting file

Enter the following:

$ RUN downloaded-filename

Where:
Variable Your value
downloaded-filename NETSCAPE-EXPORT-ALPHA-V303C4R-JAVA-GOLD.EXE-DCX_AXPEXE

The system displays information about the file compression version, and help information about the command syntax.

At the Decompress into (file specification): prompt, specify a new name and location for the uncompressed file in the form device:[directory]file-specification. The system expands the file and places it in the directory you specify with the new name.

For example:

Decompress into
(file specification): DISK$1:[SMITH.BETAS]NETSCAPE-JAVA.EXE

Step 3: Copying the Java class library file

For Java to function within the Navigator, the Java class libraries are required. This is the file JAVA_301. You can make this file available to the Navigator in one of two ways:

  1. Copy JAVA_301. to the [.NETSCAPE] subdirectory of SYS$LOGIN. (By default, the Navigator looks in that directory for this file.)
  2. Copy JAVA_301. to a directory other than [.NETSCAPE] and define the logical name NETSCAPE_CLASSPATH to point to that directory. For example:
    $ DEFINE NETSCAPE_CLASSPATH DEVICE:[DIRECTORY]JAVA_301

    Do not rename the Java class library file; it must be named JAVA_301. (no file type).

Step 4: Running the new version

Start the Navigator using the RUN command. For example:

$ RUN DISK$1:[SMITH.BETAS]NETSCAPE-JAVA.EXE
