All SMBCLIENT wants is to read the file SAMBA_ROOT:[LIB]SMB.CONF (i.e. you need some directory named [...LIB], plus a rooted logical, plus a custom SMB.CONF that at least has the right 'workgroup' name [or similar] in it). It does want a reasonably recent version of UCX [or equivalent]; on VAX, it doesn't work with UCX V2, but V3.2[eco6] and - most probably - all newer UCX versions are fine. The SAMBA distribution has all the object files required for building SMBCLIENT on VMS V5.5-2 and up, VAX or ALPHA ... Wolfgang J.
