[Click Here] An Overview - What would a hacker profiler do? (Let's first come up with a job description) There have been 16 murders in the small town of OhNoHelpUs over the last two months. The city has police officers making extra patrols of the neighborhoods, and has teams of detectives working around the clock. Physical evidence is gathered. Still, no suspects. Although this is a fictional scenario (I know that I'd have people writing in asking me where the town of OhNoHelpUs is located), there have been many cases like this which are true to life. What law enforcement eventually realized, is that they needed to get into the heads of the criminals. A good profiler has the ability to develop a suspect not through identifying physical evidence (such as fingerprints), but through scenarios, circumstances, and similarities. "Digital Crimes, Terrorism, and Warfare" take these types of events to even new levels. People hiding behind invisible walls created by the manipulation of data. A realm where no physical evidence exists. In other words, you'll find no DNA or Fingerprints here. A profiler could potentially be more valuable in the "digital realm" than any other area. A realm where the only evidence that exists may be that of scenario, circumstance, and similarity. Yet, to date, this is an area which is completely void of such personnel. But why? Well, I'd guess there are two primary reasons. The first and most obvious one, would be that the "Digital Realm" is a new one, and the powers that be are simply behind the ball. The other, is probably the lack of "intelligence". Profilers use past cases, evidence, and suspects, to help "predict" what current, and future, cases, evidence, and suspects might be like. Currently, there is very little data in the mainstream world which would help a profiler to "develop" that ability. But just because the mainstream hasn't gotten a hold of the data, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. What I hope to cover in this report are just a few of the many scenarios, circumstances, and similarities, that I've found by working with the "underground" over the years. I hope that you'll find it interesting, informative, and perhaps, foreshadowing, of some of the techniques which may some day be common tools in the "Digital Profiler's" arsenal.
