You'd think that they'd at least get a clue about basic performance techniques. My hard drive was constantly performing updates, even during idle periods, so I fired up FileMon and found out that it is Explorer performing updates to my user hive. Urrgggh! If I was a conspiracy theorist I'd jump at the chance at MS being in cohoots with Intel to force people to need upgrades. However, I think this is far more likely to be a case of common stupidity. You have to remember that Explorer and IE came from teams outside of the NT group (who do know how to write programs) such as the Win9x team, who don't have the first clue. Also, to make matters worse, any decent talent (eg Steve Wood) that were working in the personal OS division were transfered to the NT team. What's a pity is that the crap that comes out of this team is foisted onto NT, and everyone pays. Did you know that the NT team had produced a killer new UI for NT4 ? But, the Win9x team's version was finished/released first, and so this code was forced onto the NT team against their vehement protests. A case of MS letting the tail wag the dog... Using the registry monitor tools from www.sysinternals.com, I see things like: 2400+ registry calls to open a new copy of IE 5 280+ registry calls just be clicking on a different directory in file explorer 10,000+ registry calls just to create a new directory in file explorer 200+ registry calls just by clicking the home button in IE 5 It's no wonder my Pentium II based WinNT system seems a bit slugish. I have to believe only a very tiny bit of this registry data is changing dynamically. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [ To unsubscribe, send email to ntdev-request@atria.com with body UNSUBSCRIBE (the subject is ignored). ]
