              Installation procedures under Window 95 and NT

People with prior technical experience can usually download and install the
proxy in ten minutes, but the procedures are not typical for Windows
software. We plan to improve the ease of installation of the proxy for
Windows 95/NT in later versions. If you find the procedure too complicated,
you can wait for a later version, or use another product such as interMute
or Muffin, or ask your ISP or systems administrator to provide an Internet
Junkbuster proxy for you and others. And please tell us if there's any part
that could have been made easier to follow.

If you haven't already seen the FAQ you might want to read the top
questions first.

  1. First click here to download the zip file called ijb20.zip (~208k),
     then uncompress and unpack the zip archive using a tool like WinZip.
  2. Now the distribution (source and sample files) will be in a folder
     called ijb20. Get into that folder.
  3. Run the executable with the command:
        junkbstr
     (Click on the icon with that name that looks like a terminal, not like
     a notepad.) It should print a notice like the following to tell you it
     is alive.
        Internet Junkbuster Proxy (TM) Version 2.0.1 for Windows, Copyright
     ...
        The Internet Junkbuster Proxy (TM) is running and ready to serve!
     After that it won't say anything unless you have the debug option set
     or if an error occurs. It's best not to minimize the DOS window until
     after you have it working satisfactorily, and don't close the window
     or you will kill the proxy with it.
  4. Next, follow the instructions in the FAQ to configure your browser to
     talk to the proxy on localhost on port 8000. Make notes on the changes
     you make so you know how to undo them! You will need to know what you
     did in case you wish to discontinue using the proxy. If the proxy
     later stops running (perhaps because you shut down and restart your
     computer) you will get messages such as ``server not responding'' from
     your browser, and you may not be able to view pages. If this happens
     you will need to either restart the proxy or change your browser's
     proxy configuration back.
  5. Check whether your browser is talking to the proxy by going to this
     URL:
        http://internet.junkbuster.com/cgi-bin/show-proxy-args
     If you are, the proxy intervenes and displays its configuration; if
     there was no proxy we warn you of this.
  6. Check that the proxy can connect to the web by clicking on the URL
        http://www.junkbusters.com/ht/en/ijbwin.html#connect
     (which takes you to this part of the text on our server) and then hit
     the Reload or Refresh button on your browser to make sure that it's
     really coming from the web, not from the local cache. If you don't get
     a warning message in a dialog box, all is OK.
  7. If you experience difficulties, stop using the proxy by undoing what
     you did in the browser configuration step above.
  8. Once you have the proxy working satisfactorily, you might want to shut
     down the proxy, configure it to start automatically when Windows
     starts up, and reboot. To stop the DOS window popping up, comment in
     the hide-console in the junkbstr.ini configuration file.
  9. If you want your proxy to block any ads or sites, see the FAQ on
     blocking.

If you have any suggestions on improving these instructions, or would just
like to share your experience of it (e.g. how long it took) please tell us.

Note that the default configuration blocks most cookies, but no sites or
ads. Instructions on how to change the configuration are given in the FAQ.

 [Feedback]   Uninstalling the proxy

Because nothing in the registry is changed by installing the proxy, you
don't need to go through any special uninstall procedure; you can simply
remove the folder and files where it lives. If you set up a shortcut in the
Startup Folder you might want to remove this. Go to the Start Menu, click
Settings, then Taskbar. When the dialog box pops up choose the Start Menu
Programs tab and click the Remove button. Navigate down the list until you
find Startup and click the ``+'' sign to its left. Select the junkbuster
entry you want to remove and click the Remove button at the bottom. Then
click on OK.

 [Feedback]   Installing the proxy as a service under Windows NT

The advantage of using a service on an NT installation is that the proxy
can be started automatically when the server reboots, without the need for
a user to login from the console to run it.

As an alternative, one of our users recommended NetLaunch as a way to can
launch Junkbuster on DUN launch and close it at the end of the session. If
you try this we'd be interested to hear your experience.

Here are some tips offered by some of our users; if you have any
suggestions on how to improve them please tell us.

The basic tool is the SRVANY utility, included as part of the Windows NT
resource kit. It is available by FTP from Microsoft. Easily adapted
instructions are included with the program in the file SRVANY.WRI and at
http://www.cat-soft.com/srvany.htm or many other places on the web.

The Control Panel can be used to set the service to start automatically. It
can also be started and stopped manually using the commands:

     net start junkbuster
     net stop junkbuster

Instead of editing the registry using regedt32 as described in the
instructions, you can insert the correct path in the following few lines,
save it to a file ending in the extension .REG and double-click it.

     REGEDIT4

     [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\JunkBuster\Parameters]

     "Application"="c:\\junkbuster\\path\\with\\double\\backslashes\\junkbstr.exe"

     "AppDirectory"="c:\\junkbuster\\path\\with\\double\\backslashes\\"

This file and the commands above assume that the service was named
junkbuster in INSTSRV.

Caution: NT will report that the service has started successfully even if
there was an error. Test the proxy or examine the logfile after installing
for the first time or changing configuration files. If an error occurs,
stop the service, fix the configuration files and restart.

We've also received the following guide, but haven't checked it, so please
tell us any suggested changes.

     Copy SRVANY.EXE and INSTSRV.EXE to your NT system directory and
     install it as a Windows NT service, for example:
     instsrv JunkBuster c:\winnt\System32\srvany.exe
     Specifying the application to start and its parameters:
     Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE):
     Under
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\JunkBuster
     create a 'Parameters' key
     Under the Parameters key, create an 'Application' value of type
     REG_SZ and specify there the full path of your app executable
     (including the extension). For example:
     Application: REG_SZ: C:\JunkBuster\junkbstr.exe
     Under the above key, create an 'AppDirectory' value of type
     REG_SZ and specify the current directory to use for the app, eg:
     AppDirectory: REG_SZ: C:\JunkBuster
     Optional: Under the above key, create an 'AppParameters' value of
     type REG_SZ and specify the parameters for your app. For Example:
     AppParameters: REG_SZ: -b MyBlock.ini
