Hi Folks,

        You might remember me, I've been maintaining the PDP-11 freeware
archives at

  ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/academic/computer-science/history/pdp-11/

for the past decade, and I posted a few months ago saying that I was
beta-testing some CD copies of the archives.  (Well, some readers
of this list did the beta-testing, I just organized and distributed
copies of the CD's!)

        The beta-testing is done, I've run off the first batch
of "production" RT-11 Freeware CD-R's, and they're now available
for sale.  I'm hooked up as a "zShop" through Amazon.com, and you can

Both sites have links to the "PDP-11 Freeware FAQ", which contains
a list of known sites on the web that have PDP-11 Freeware.  There's
also a detailed list of the contents of the RT-11 Freeware CD
available for your browsing, and you'll find these contents at sites
mentioned in the Freeware FAQ if you don't want to buy the CD.  I
want to emphasize that the CD version is being made available as
a convenience for those who like having hundreds of megabytes of
software in their pockets; of course the archives on the net will
still be available in the future!

One notable feature of this CD is that it is directly readable on
a PDP-11 system equipped with a suitable SCSI host adapter and
SCSI CD-ROM drive and running a recent version of RT-11.

I think the Amazon.com "zShop" concept is really pretty nifty, and if
you order through there with your credit card shipment is immediate.
